Lose inches, in- ches, and more inches in just sev- eral sessions at your local toning salon. Get rid of- that unwanted cellulite and develop firm musc- les, without -sweating a a drop. Simply lie down, relax, and let the motorized tables do ail the work. But remember'the old say- ing, *"If it sounds too gpod to be true, it. usually is." Despite the wisdom of this ad- vice, people (mainly womnen) are flocking into toring,.salons across the country. Already one of the most rapidly growing businesses in the United States, they are now1 popular throughout Durl3am Region. A toning, salon is usually comprised of five to seven differ- ent notorized tables which move in varlous ways to more different parts of the body through their range of motion. The tables are usually 'Set to operate continu- ously for eight to 10 minutes. each. SHealth care experts -have stat- ed that passive exercise machin- es, like the motorized tables used in *the toniùg salons, have been used successfully for decades as a form of rehabilitation, particular- ly for people who have undergone orthopedic surgery. Their chief purpose is to increase the flexibil- ity of inýjured joints. But to take these machines and promote them as a passive way to lose inches is Just another form of health quackery," according to William Jarvis, in a rece nt article published in "The Physician And Sports Medicine." Jarvis, who isthe president of the National Council Against* Health Fraud in the United States and an associate professor of preventative medicine at the Ljoma Linda (California) Univer- sity school of medicine also adds, "Passive exercise goes againat the most basic concepts of physiology, so how could it possibly be effec- tive?" Let us now take a dloser look at some of the dlaims being made by the proprietors of these salons. Virtually all advertisements for this form of exercise go to great length to explain that conven- tional or "old fashioned" exercises and weight machines build musc- les, unlike their machines which tone and firm muscles to cause inch loss. But the way muscles become "firm and toned" -is by building muscle. Imagine you had broken your leg and it had been in a cast for three months. Would your leg expand and get bigger with inactivity? 0f coure not. When the cast camne off, the leg would look like a stick. Now the rest of your body may very well be fatter due to enforced immobil- ity and the resulting decrease in energy expenditure. Our muscles are amazingly adaptive. If we do not use them, we lose themn. Sim- ilarly, people who have been ex- tremely inactive for a prolonged period of time, have very little muscle tissue and need to bild it up while decreasing their body's fat content. But women do not need to worry about getting overly big, bulky muscles because they do not have the hormones neccessary to build as easily or as large as men. With the expectiôn of, dras- tic cases such as the previously cited exaxnple of someone with a broken leg, feniale muscle devel- opmen t can be likened to a water bed. Out of shape musles are soft and flabby like a water bed that is too soft. As you add water to the bed it gets much firmer and harder without increasing in size. Women add muscle to their bod- ies and-get firmer and harder and stronger, with little visible change in the size of their musc- les. Women looking to lose inches need to concentrate on the real cuiprit - stored body fat. As we have alI heard many times over, the only two ways to get rid of those extra calories which are stored as body fat are to cut down on the number of calories con- sumed and increase the number of calories expended by engaging in a regular program of aerobic exercise. Yes, the kind that makes you sweat! Because exer- cise tables do the work for you, the calorie expenditure of a ses- SEE PAGE 20 SuNoco SALUTES Our besi.'
