PAGE 24, WHITBY-FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 5,1988 Uc i Sean Whitehead Liz Aruta Pinch yourself if you must, it's not a bad dream, it's reality. Yes, we're back, back at school once again. -It seems that we were just here a week ago, but really we've been on vacation for two and a half months. I say it's time to hit the books, but like many other students, I'm all talk. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new principal, Mr. Musselman (a Henry graduate) and to our new vice principal, Mr. Daleman and to the rest of the staff new to Henry Street High School. Im sure that the students will make them feel at welcome and at home, here at HSHS. Though it's very early in the season, both the junior and senior football teams are lookirig very promising. The senior football team defeated Dunbarton 6-0 at the annual east-west game. The juniors, watching the seniors win, decided that winning was fun, so came together and with a combined effort defeated the Eastdale Eagles 29-0. The defence shut out the Eagles and produced five turnovers. Henry's senior girls' basketball team participated in a tournament at Ajax. The team put in a strong effort to defeat Ajax 35-27. Henry, though, was eliminated by a powerful Dunbarton team. Henry's team worked hard and shows a great deal of promise for the season. The girls, adding a couple more of practices, defeated Port Perry by a score of 58-13. The win included both an impressive display of defensive intensity and a well balanced attack. It was a solid team effort. Well, our first Henry dance was a success, and enjoyed by everyone. I see great propects with our new school president Andy Weiss. I'm sure he'll make this year exciting and memorable for everyone at Henry Street High School. TEE PARENT GUILD of Trafalgar Castle School held a fashion show at the school last Thursday Free Press photo 7 Charlyn Long ANDERSON'S MUSIC students association held their bike-a-thon on Saturday to raise funds for band activities Free Press photo On Sept. 7, Trafalgar Castle opened its doors to begin another academic year. This has been a ritual for 115 years, ever since the board purchased the castle from Sheriff Nelson Gilbert Reynolds in 1874 to establish a private school for young ladies. In the early years, with fewer girls, the school kept a friendly, close-knit atmosphere. Even with the increase in size we still try to foster that spirit today. This year Trafalgar boasts its largest enrolment ever, apporoximatley 200 students. With nearly 90 of them new girls, it was decided that a camping weekend would be a good way for everyone to become acquainted. Early Sept. 17, the juniors headed north to Allen Lake where they lodged at Mrs. Crawford's cottage. Enthusiastic seniors were also bound for a wilderness adventure. Both trips were a big success. Between waterskiing, swimming, and barbecues, the students somehow found time to get to know each other. Day trips are also popular at Trafalgar and throughout the year a number of these aie arranged. There are 120 boarders at the castle* many of which are from overseas. Weekend outings provide these girls with an escape on occasion. Saturday, Sept. 24 was perfect to spend outdoors on the first scheduled trip to Canada's Wonderland. For some it was the rollercoasters that caught their attention, while others preferred to browse through the quaint shops. It was a new experience for those who had just arrived in the country, and the numerous souvenirs that returned with them showed it was an enjoyable excursion. With the encouraging feeling that came out of those f=ret expeditions, it's obvious that the school year is off to a good start. -C Give as generously as you are able. iAle CM3D)l IES * osE é-0 0 PI~Ll1L,> . CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF WHITBY ADULT SCHOOL CROSSING GUARDS Application are now being accepted by The Town of Whitby for the position of Aduit School Crossing Guards on: - BONACORD AVENUE at RESOLUTE / FROST HENRY STREET at DUNLOP STREET WEST ROVER GUARD (vehicle required) Applications are to be received on or before friday, October 7, 1988, and addressed to: - Mr. Wm. H. Wallace, Administrator, Corporation of the Town of Whitby, 575 Rossland Road East, Whitby, Ontario. L1N 2M8 Four weeks have already passed, but despite this relatively short period of time, a lot of activities have taken place here at Denis O'Connor High School. In the past week, we have had a constant push from everyone to increase the number of pledges for our upcoming DO'C-a-thon. Spirit assemblies, challenges from one homeroom to another as to who will be number one, and added incentives to those who go above and beyond their quota, are all part of this traditional event. Similar to last year's proceedings, students and teachers will spend half a day walking a gruelling 10km. This wallç has proved to be one of the main spirit boosters and hopefully it will turn out to be another success. Our DO'C-a-thon assembly turned out to be one of the better assemblies held in the history of DO'C gatherings, which should be credited to our wonderful student council president, Darby Walsh. Mrs. Ryan, Mr. Coghlan, Mr. Campbell and Mr. McCollum al should be commended in their various acts in helping this assembly to be the success that is was. Let's hope that the success of these proceedings will carry over to the walk itself which will take place on Oct. 4. Luckily, there is a four-day weekend following the walk, which will provide the DO'C body with ample time to rest their weary feet. As usual, the DO'C sports teams have been extremely busy. First of all, our girls' field hockey team began their season.in the same shape they went out with last season - winning! The girls defeated Dunbarton handily with a score of 6-0. Our girls lost some steam in their second game, but still came out victorious against Pickering High, winning by a slim margin of 1-0. The second team seems to have caught the winning streak, also defeating Pickering 2-0. While our girls seem to be on a winning'streak, our boys are neither winning nor losing. Our senior and junior soccer teams came out with a 1-1 draw each, against two strong Ajax squads. For the seniors, Bill Heaney continues to show his scoring sbility, recordng another goal, while the juniors show their offensive power in striker Steve Poirier. It has become common practice to witness a member of the DO'C body excel in their given field and become noticed for it. In past years we have seen our athletes reach level unattainable to many others. We've seen rising hockey feats, national soccer stars and field hockey experts. Recently, however, DO'C has comé to sée two very special athletes accomplish a feat no other DO'C alumni can boast about. Christina MacDonald and Larissa Lowing are two such athletes. Though their chances at medals were almost nil, the very fact tney were able to compete and become recognized as the best in Canada were tremendous accomplishments. DO'C is very proud of our two gymnasts in their competition at the Olympic Games. From all of us at DO'C, I'd like to welcome them home and send out our very best wishes. Congratulations girls!
