F.M.Heard Gr. 6 class aids relief effô*rt ài By Feroneh Neil Just because they're young, doesn't mean they aren't con- cerned. And Richard Pearce's sixth graders of F.M. Heard are concemned about Jamaica in the aftermath of Hurricane Gilbert, 50, they decided to do something to help. The idea originally came from two of Pearce's students, Cornie McFarlane and Emily Smiàth. "I heard about the hurricane and saw pictures," says McFar- lane. I thought that maybe . we could do something" The next day the two girls asked their teacher if they could discuss their idea with classmates before recess. They presented their idea, and received a good response from the class. I thought of the idea of raising money," says Smith. Unfor- tunately, as 'the students found out from their principal, they weren't allowed to raise funds. So they had te corne up with something else. They decided upon a plan so that every student had a part to play in some way. McFarlane phoned the Red Cross to find out what was needed and the students broadcasted announce- ments over the public address ;,ystem to advertise.- They also made up posters te, get their urgent message across. "Vie went over it every morning to organize," says Pea- rce. SAnother student, Patrick HFli, feit a more personal concern as he lived in Jamaica for two years.
