From that start in 'April of 1954, Curtis Brown's Electric bas grown and gained a solid repu- tation through generations of quality electrical work. And upon bis recent retirement, the busi- ness bas been carried on by bis son Grant and bis wife Kyle. 'We were visiting from Toron- * to, and my sister-in-law wanted some electrical work done. t was nearly impossible to find anyone to do it (in Whitby) and tbis gave me the idea (to setup sbop in Wihitby)," recalîs Curt Brown. At that time, Brown bad bis master~s certificate asan electri- cian. He had worked on wiri ng at Sunnybrook Hospital, the Ford plant in Oakville, and the Grand- stand at the ONE grounds. The business first operated from a house on Cochrane St., and Brown's first customers were local builders, branc-hing out to service' construction companies such as Sorchetti and McEwen. Today, the business does wir- ing for factories, the Durhamn school board and some domestic wiring. 0f bis competitors tbrougb the years, Brown has notbiàng but positive cominents to make. "When.I was running it, I had calîs froni Oshawa, Ajax, Port Perry," says Curt. "Customers would say, "You worked for my dad years ago." Hie also attributes much of the request for electrical services to advertising on the service trucks. Father and son enjoy the business for several reasons. "I liked the feeling of indepen- dence, the freedom 'to do what I want, to'be able to schedule my freedom, Curt says. 1I like the freedom and the variety of work. I see something new every day; and I like meeting people," Grant says. Curt has fond memories of bis time in the business, but has no delusions as to what would be re- quired of him ifhe had to start up bis business today.. ý "You have. got to have. big bucks to start a business today. If I was to do it again, I wouldn't do it , Curt says. .Grant adds that anyone inter- ested in starting up a business should take advantage of any business courses they can get. However, Curt says," Whitby has been good to me. r'd do it again in Whitby." Although Curt- is living ini Fenelon Falls, he still returns to Whitby every Thursday for Whitby' Brass Band *practice, an-d is a member of the Whitby Mas- onic Lodge. Grant has three sons.
