The Sprint is one of the lowest priced, fuel efficient models of the GM line to be offered this fall, and is targeted to appeal to the low end economy segment of the car market. General Motors is aiming the Sprint primarily at the young single driver and families requir- ing a second vehicle. GM says the main reasons for purchasing the car would be rice, fuel economy, image and stying. The basic Sprint is available as a two-door and four-door hatchback; the Sprint CL in both two-and four-door hatchback; and the Turbo Sprint as a two-door hatchback coupe. . Al models are now imported from Suzuki in Japan, and will eventually be built by General Motors and Suzuki in Ingersoll. Sprint's 1-litre, three-cylinder engine has been modified in several areas for 1989. A new cylinder head increases performance while retaining economy, says GM. A new direct acting valve train, along with hydraulic valve lifters help improve performance and driveability. A throttle body injector system replaces the previously used carburetor for increased horse- power and efficiency. To make Sprint's. engine smoother and quieter, a high racker armong new GM models for '89 efficiency oil pump of the gerotor design is mounted at the front of' the engine and is driven off the crankshaft.1 The cylinder block is made of cast aluminum alloy with cast iron cylinder sleeves. The turbo version of the three-cylinder engine has multi- port fuel injection and will only be offered in Canada. New for Sprint models in 1989 is a sunroof, available for all models. The Tracker, a four-wheel drive sport utility vehicle, is also imported from Suzuki by General Motors. The truck is designed with the youthful market looking for off road use in mind. Tracker is available in four .models and is marketed under Chevrolet and GMC nameplates. Collectibles such as gum cards and sports photo- graphs of stars past and present will be available for buying, sel- ling and trading as well as a broad range of comic books. The show, booked in the Bobby Orr Lounge of the Civic Auditorium in Oshawa, offers a unique opportunity to sports en- thusiasts of all ages to participate in a fun activity. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Oshawa-Whitby-Newcastle Unit- ed Way campaign. The show organizers antici- pate a sellout crowd for this event given the popularity of similar shows held-in other communities. This will be a unique opportunity for collectors and browsers to see a wide range of items gathered in one location. Now is the time to locate those old baseball cards and comic books stored in the at- tic. Dealers from Southern Ont- ario and Quebec are expected to attend. Admission tickets will be sold at the door only and the doors will be open from 11, a.m. to 4 p.m. The tickets are priced at $3 for adults and $1 for children under age 14.
