Nielsen said his team's effort might be partly attributed to the fact that his players had neyer been on the road for such a long period. But he said his players now know what to expect in Mann Cup action, and he promised they would be in next year's final. There were full houses at Iro- quois for ail the games, and Vip- ond said a more competitive schedule for Redmen in the Ont- ario league might also attract such crowds. Hie said Peterborough, another of the three major teams in Ont- ario: has become stronger and a more competitive opposition for Redmen. Vipond hopes that some existing senior teanis become stronger to join the major leX'el and thereby provide more fan in- terest. Attendance for the six games of the Mann Cup series at Iroquois Park arena was more than 12,000 - 'way above expectations," says Ontario major lacrosse commissioner Mike Gray of Whitby. "We just neyer thought we'd see it," he said of crowds, about a third higher than crowds for the Mann Cup series here in 1986. Gray says "fans came out of the woodwork" to see the series, referring to fans that aren't apparent during the regular season contests. "When teams are verv competitive, theyll turn out," says Gray, who received many favorable comments about play in this year's Canadian champion- ship.a Gate receipts totalled more than $63,000. for the series. Money goes to pay Mann Cup expenses, including Adanacs' air flight, hotel and meals, and, like last year, championship rings to Redmen ((fray says perhaps 50 in total, worth $25,000). He also estimates the three Ontario major teams will each receive $8,000 . Gray said there were few prob- lems with the large crowds, although there wasn't enough parking. He said staff at Iroquois coped well with the larger than expected crowds.
