PAGE 14, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7,1988 Whitby bail teaâms eliminated in finals Whitby's junior and bantam ail-star basebail teams both managed victories before being eliminated in the Ontario finals over the weekend. Were it, not for Waterloo, Whitb juniors may have advanced further in the OBA finals. Whitby won their -first games 9-7 over Welland, then lost 11-6 to' Waterloo. After an 8-5 Win over London, Whitby again feil to Waterloo 11-0. "The kids really played well, but just ran out of gas," said manager Sam Dempster. "When we got there, they thought they'd be in over their heads," Dempster said of his players. "But then they found out they were just as good as the other guys. "Every team there had a shot at winning it." Dempster said an eight-run second inning for Waterloo spoiled an otherwise fine outing by Wvhitby in the 11-6 loss. One player who hit solidly for Whitby throughout the Ontario final was Scott Burnett. He batted over .500 in the fu games. Jef Hardy was the winning pitcher for Whitby in the opening game while Rob Lytle won the third game over London. Whitby played in 'the OBA finals without one of their top hitters Rod Nichols, who had returned to college. Dempster says the junior team will lose centrefielder Burnett, Doug McCorkall and Dave Imeson next year, but. the remaining members of this year's team are eligible to play next year., Overail, juniors had 27 wins, nine losses and a tie for the 1988 year. Whitby bantam manager AI Baker also wasn't disappointed by his team's performance in Clarkson over the long weekend. Whitby lost 3-2 to the home team in the opening game, spoiling a fine five- hitter by Whitby pitcher Mike Baker. Jared Stevens scored both runs for Whitby against a fine Clarkson hurler who also allowed only five hits. Whitby came back to defeat Stoney Creek 6-1 in their second game, behind the seven-hit ptching of Jamie Watters. Manager Baker said second baseman Darryn Christie and shortstop Shayne Keddy gave great support defensively. Simon Gosgnach had. two hits for Whitby. Whitby was eliminated from further play after a 15-10 loss to South London. "They (London) got il in the first inning," said Baker of the slon-py fielding start by his team.
