Nemish says the opened Lakeridge Golf Club on Brawley course could be open by October. Free Press photo Golf course may open in fal The owners of the newest golf course in Whitby, are hopeful they can have their champion- ship, 7,000-yd. course open by October. Lakeridge golf course is located at Durham Rd. 23 and Brawley Rd. "The drought was our biggest problerp this year and the course came through it extremely well," said Jerry Nemish, pro for both Lakerde and Winchester golf course located on Hwy. 7 in Brooklin. However, he adds, the drought may have hindered the poss- ibility of opening this faîl." Nemish said the owners, Bruce and Doug Summers, who also own Winchester, will make the decision witbin a month whether or not to'open Lakeridge. "They don't want to rush this, the y want to do it properly," said.- Nemish. But while the course is still unopened, Nemish said there are already more than 100 mem- berships. But he adds that an extra incentive was a dual mem- bersbip at one price foi: both Lakeridge and Winchester. While the course will play 7,000 yýards in length, Nemish notes it will play as short as 5,000 yards for ladies. . "That is important to us, we want to draw the enthusiastic players as well as the good players. The course will not only accommodate the four-han. dicapper but also the 34-handi- capper." Besides the 18 holes (the back nine will circle around the front nine) plans have been submnitted to WTIhitby council for another nine holes and 41 estate -lots to the east of the course. Nemish says the greens were seeded last June and were top dressed this past week. H1e says; they are coming, in very thick, without spacing. Again, he points to the drought as the biggest problem facing the greens. H1e said the owners had been looking at an Aug. 1 opening, but, again, the drought; cancelled those plans. The clubhouse, which overlooks the course, is 9,000 sq. ft. in size and will be completed for the opening of the course. The clubhouse will also have banquet room facilities for up to 200 people. - "There has been a rapid growth in the area and a demand for more golf courses. Leisure time is becoming more important to people and the way they spend that time," says Nemnish as one reason for building the course. 11e says some of the assistant pros from Winchester have played some of the' holes on the back fine to get a feel for the distance of the course. The Ontario Golf Association will also be invited te rate the course for yardage when it opens, added Nemish.
