WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24, 1988, PAGE 13 High speed chase through Whitby Durham Regional police are 'looking for a male, believed to be 16 or 17 years old, who eluded them after a chase through Whitby Sunday night. The chase began when an officer in an unmarked car spotted a motorcycle travelling through a red light at the Brock/Dundas intersection at 6:21 p.m. When the officer put on the cruiser lights to stop the bike, the driver increased speed, event- ually making a right turn onto Reynolds from Dundas. The driver of the bike then made his way to Blair St. and proceeded north to Dundas with the officer still in chase. The motorcycle driver went through the Blair/Dundas intersection, forcing at least two cars to swerve to avoid a collision. The motorcycle proceeded north on Garden St. where speeds reached 100 km/h. At one point the officer was able to pull even with the motorcycle but was unable to stop it. The driver of the motorcycle was also able to swerve around a marked police car which was blocking Garden St. The driver eventually lost control of his bike on Garden, north of Rossland but ran into a corn field. Police were unable to find him before darkness set in. Police report the chase lasted about four minutes. Pump station construction at Annes/Burns By Debbie Luchuk Construction of a sewage pumping station at the inter- section of Burns St. W. and Annes St. in Whitby, by G.C. Romano Sons Limited, will be carried out from now until January. Regional council gave their aPproval to an adjusted tender of $283,000 on July 27 for the project, which was recommended by Region consultants in a flood relief report to relieve basement flooding in the Annes St. area. Flooding occurred in the area and in other locations from a rain storm Aug. 26 and 27 in 1986.. Romano, based in Concord, had bid $345,000 for the project, the lowest tender of three submitted to the Region. However, the tender was adjusted because the price submitted by the lowest bidder was considerably higher than the budgeted amount for the work. A Region works report stated that the price was higher because of "unexpectedly poor soil con- ditions at the site, changes that were made during the detailed design phase and the overheated economy in the Southern Ontario area that has led to a lessening of competition in the construction industry and to resulting higher prices." Negotiations were held between the Region and contractor to reduce costs by $62,000. The major item deleted to reduce costs was a portable diesel generator set. To be constructed are a 10-metre (32-ft.) deep submer- sible sewage pumping station, with two submersible pumps, 44 metres of sanitary sewers and 32 metres of forcemain. OMB hearmg canceiled REV. STANLEY ISHWERWOOD, rector of St. John's Anglican Church, is leaving for a position as associate priest at St. Peter's Church in Cobourg later this month. Free Press photo Rev. Isherwood leaves Whitby By Debbie Luchuk Members of the congregation of St. John's Anglican Church in Whitby will soon lose their well-respected minister, Rev. Stanley Isherwood. The reverend will be leaving St. John's for a post as associate priest at St. Peter's Church in Cobourg. His successor at St. John's has not yet been deter- mined. Isherwood has been at St. John's for four years. He said that he felt the time was right to leave, and that it was time for the congregation to benefit from new leadership. "I felt I had done what I was meant to do here," he told The Free Press. Isherwood had nothing but praise for the church and the community at large. "I liked it very much here. I lived in the Port (Whitby) all of the time, and I liked being able to walk most places. We really appreciated the recreational pro- grams here," said Isherwood whose son has been involved in minor baseball. One of the highlights Isherwood will remember about Whitby was working with other clergy in the ministerial association (an interdenomi- national group). Isherwood said that the people of his congregation are what he will remember the most. "I will miss the people, but the nice thing about the church (his new congregation) is that there will be new people there that will be just as welcoming," Isherwood said. "I will miss the smallness of the place (St. John's) and the intimacy of the church. I was able to be informal in this situation." "They cancelled and have decided to go through the rezoning process," said Whitby planning director Bob Short. The Town had also wanted the hearing postponed. Green Briar had asked for the hearing because council had failed to deal with the application to rezone the land from medium density residential to commer- cial, within the required 30 days. The Town had preferred that the application go through a public process. It was no joke A 16-year-old counsellor at Heber Down Conservation Area had to be taken to Whitby General Hospital after a plaster casting hardened after it was poured over her head as a joke. The hospital was able to remove the plaster from her skin. But the counsellor's hair had to be cut in order to remove the plaster. The girl was otherwise uninjured. See us for ail your freezer needs!
