PAGE 8, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17, 1988 Ed Gaskin visited by,'special'N.S. guests By Debbie Luchuk A Whitby officer of St. John Ambulance had some very special guests last week from Nova Scotia. Ed Gaskin had a visit from a Halifax family that looked after him when he travelled to Halifax for an operation on kidney stones that could not be performed here two years ago. The Samson family, all involved in St. John Ambulance in Halifax, received a phone call from the association in Durham Region the day before Gaskin was scheduled to fly in for surgery in a Halifax hospital. The Samsons agreed, even on short notice, to pick up Gaskin from the airport, take him to the hospital and look after him for a few' days after surgery. "They called at 4 (p.m.) on that day and he was arriving at 3 (p.m.) the next'day. We were very pleased to be able to help him," Sue Samson said. Although recuperating from surgery, Gaskin did see some of the sights with his host family while in Nova·Scotia. "It was enjoyable, and I enjoyed the scenery and countryside," Gaskin said. Gaskin has been involved with the Ambulance for 23 years. Tunney to again run for trustee Catharine Tunney has ack- nowledged that she will be seeking another term as a Whitby separate school trustee. Two other trustees, Tom Oldman and Ed Finan, contacted by The Free Press, have ind- icated they are still undecided. Whitby's fourth trustee, Tia Woodcroft was unavailable for comment. "I don't think I ever decided not to run," said Tunney, who indicated there are a lot of issues she wants to see resolved. "I am on a committee setting guidelines for the child care centres in the schools and I would like to see the new Whitby high school completed," said Tunney. Vice-chairman of the board this year, Tunney said she would like to chair the board one day. She told The Free Press she would support existing chairman Tia Woodcroft if Woodcroft decides to run in the November election. "I have really enjoyed the job. It has been a wonderful learning experience," said Tunney. ST. JOHN'S Ambulance officer Ed Gaskin ago. Joy rides at Kartways Damage to a bench at Family Kartways is estimated at $160 after five people broke into the popular Whitby attraction and took five go-karts for rides on the track over the weekend, after the establishment was closed. Durham Regional Police say the five drove the karts around the track between 1i p.m. on Saturday night and 6 a.m. on Sunday morning, destroying a bench in the process. Police say the karts appear to have been driven for about one hour, based on the gasoline used. Also used for a ride were the bumper boats and the water slide. C6-*.
