Tyke lacrosse team is zone champion' Whitby's tyke rep lacrosse teain are zone 6 champions after defeating Toronto Beaches last Thursday. The Whitby team, sponsored by the Brooklin Redmen, finished the season with 15 wins, five losses and a tie in league play, while winning a Mississauga toumnament, going undefeated in the Hamiilton Super Series and emerging as a flnalist in the Whitby tournament. Whitby is ranked third in Ontario and will participate in the provincial championships in Arthur and Elora Aug. 12, 13 and 14. Redmen defeatedBrnto Excelsiors 13-1, on Monday night, to take a perfect 3-0 record into their final round-robin game against Peterborough this Thursday. They also defeated Brampton 21-7 on Saturday night. Ken Calway pitched the victory over Peterborough while Adam Thompson and David Partlow shared the win over Oshawa. Cobourg led the final 13-1 by the fourth inning after some sloppy Whitby defence. But with the encouragement of an unknown fan behind the Whitby bench, Whitby cimbed back and scored seven runs in the fourth and five more in the sixth to tie the contest. Cobourg again took the lead by a run. But in their last bat, Whitby's Calway hit a long double to send home two teanimates and complete the remarkable turnabout. Calway and Rajiv Gandhi shared pitching for Whitby ifi the gaine. Marcus Tulley, Calway and Adam Thompson came up with great defensive plays in the latter stages to shut down Cobourg. The Whitby teain will next compete in the provincial (OBA) championship in Windsor, at the AAA level, in September. Coach of the teani is Marshall Thompson. assisted by John Pomroy and Greg Goring.
