Whitby will now play Peterborough for the right to represent Ontario in the Minto Cup championship. Warriors needed six games to advance to the next round against Peterborough, and according to coach Billy Eyre, defence was the key. "Our defence was really tough," noted Eyre, who chose Whitby's 12-10 win in overtime in the third game of the series as the turning point. "That was the key game. We needed to win that game, it was the turning point. I kept telling the guys we needed a break and that was it." Warriors had lost the first game 10-3 then won the second game of the series 15-12. The -overtime win gave them a Whitby hosts novice finals The novice rep lacrosse team from Whitby, ranked first in Ontario, will be hosts of the provincial championships this weekend. They then won the fourth game 11-10, lost the fifth game 14-6 before winning the important sixth game 12-10 last Friday. Warriors were defeated by Peterborough 13-5 Monday night in the first of their best-of -seven series. Peterborough lost only one game throughout the regular season, 13-12 to St. Catharines in overtime. But Eyre believes the powerful Peterborough squad can be beaten. "We have to run them down, move the ball, and not allow a fast break," said Eyre. He also noted the specialty units, powerplay and penalty killing, will have to be in top form. "We can beat them. It will be no cakewalk but we have to beat them in six games. If it goes to a seventh, their experience could pay off," said Eyre. In the St. Catharne's series, Whitby defeated the Athletics 11-10 in the fourth game, taking a 3-1 lead in the series. In that game, Dave Mc- Whirter's goal with 53 seconds remaining gave Whitby ther victory. Jason Richards had three goals for Warriors with singles going to Greg Lepine, Rich-Dyment, Steve Dyment, Derek Jones, Jeff McComb, Shalfoon and Bill Passfield. In the fifth game of the series, Athletics showed no sign of giving in to Warriors as Athletics won 14-6. Richards notched another three goals for Warriors with Chris Ainsworth, Passfield and McWhirter adding singles. In the sixth game, Warriors played a strong defensive game to defeat Athletics 12-10. Richards led Warriors with two goals. McWhirter, Passfield and Todd Wilson each had two goals. Singles went to Lepine, Steve Dyment, Jeff Whittle and Shelfoon. Watters, who was named as the league's top pitcher after nine wins and no losses during the season, allowed Peterborough only one hit in the game. Catcher Jared Stevens aided Watters by nailing three Peterborough runners who attempted steals. Whitby reached the final with wins of 12-2 over Port Hope, 13-6 over Ajax and 13-3 over Bowmanville.
