The 59-year-old polio victim decided he wasn't going to let the disease get the better of him, s0 he chose the bike and hasn't looked back since. lie began riding in 1949 and has now circled the world seven times, travelling more than 407,000 km. and visiting more than 78 countries. "I was through Wihitby in 1952 and it was very small then, now look at it," said Dube, stretching bis armns across his chest, as he rode through last week. "In 1949 no one would give me a job, so I started riding." Dube contracted polio at the age of 2. He could not walk until he was 12 and he was unable te speak until he was 16. "Now I have muscles," he add- ed. On this trip, Dube began cycling from Quebec, west across Canada. He is now returning te Montreal, then wilI make bis way down te New York. Hie expects that trip will take three months. From New York he will travel te Miami, then Mexico, Vancou- ver and back to Quebec (Hie usually heads south for the winter). The Durham separate school board voted to change trustee distribution at a special Monday night meeting. With the implementation of Bill 125, the distribution of trustees has been determined by population (voting), with boards having some options to increase and decrease the number of trustees as they see fit to suit the needs of their educational areas. The separate school board approved a new trustee distribution that take respon- sibility for the northern municipalities away from Whitby and Pickering trustees. Formerly the north was represented by trustees in Pickering (Uxbridge) and Whitby (Scugog and Brock). The north did not have its Own representative. Whitby will now have three separate school trustees, rather than four, due to the loss of responsibility for northemn municipalities. The number accurately refiects an English separate school supporter sector Of 10,489 voters and an electoral quotient of 2.707. Oshawa will have six trustees, Pickering three and Ajax two. French sector trustees expressed some concern at the implications of an additional English sector trustee, saying that Bill 125 takes away some of their rights under the Charter of Rights.
