WHITiBY FREE PRE$S, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10, 1988, PAGE 9 I AEART OFGOLD Bill Lawler: 42 years in scouting By Debbie Luchuk Bill Lawler, Whitby hydro commission chairman, bas been involved in scouting for 38 years as a leader and 42 as a member of the scouting association. For all of bis work witb boys in Whitby, he was nominated by a fellow leader, Russ Wilde, for tbe 1-eart of Gold award. Lawler remembers the exact day bek got involved in scouting, as a boy, on April 4, 1929. He spent four years in tbe organ- ization, and lost interest. However, be did return as a leader in 1937. I volunteered because tbey needed somebody," Lawler said. At tbe time, be lived in Whitby's downtawn, near the old lire department. Tbe troop be led met at the former King St. scbool, now known as R.A. Sennett, and Lawler said tbat tbey bad meetings tbrougb wartime. (Lawler was turned down by the armed forces because of a bad heart.) "There were 56 boys in the troop, and the older boys helped out,' Lawler said. Lawler's son joined scouts for a couple of years, then dropped out in pursuit of other activities. But Lawler Sr. stayed on until 1949 when what he cails a "personality clash" convinced bim to leave for the good of the boys. In 1954, he returned to scouting and started a third group that is stili tbriving. In 1957, he joined district staff as an aide-de-camp. Lawler stayed in this position until 1969 when he retired. Ilowever, in 1981, Lawler said a friend he met years ago at an international jamboree convinced him to re-enter the association in order to go to another jà imboree to celebrate their meeting 20 years before. "My greatest reward bas been the. fellowship of the jamborees. You work, you pay your own way, but it's (the experience) out of this world. It's the best quality fellowsbip you can get," Lawler said. He bas attended several jamborees, international and national, atnd said he bas made many lifelong friends through the jamborees. As a leader;, Lawler said the reward for bis time and dedication wvas "to see a kid For ftedlyse accomplisb what you bad set out for him to do and the 'look of gratitude and happiness on bis face. "Kids need direction. They have ta, learn right and wrong and there has to be a programn for that." Viola Tebble reeognized By Debbie Luchuk More than 16 years as secretary and sometime treasurer of a Whitby scouting group, earned Viola Tebble a Heart of Gold award. She is now district treasurer for the scouts, and it is ber job to look after tbe budget and bookkeeping. When the district council was witbout a secretary, Tebble took on the position. She had been treasurer of the S8rd -Whitby boy scouts up until four years ago. Penny Scuse, current treasurer of 3rd Whitby, said in ber nominating letter that Tebble and ber'family belped out with paper drives and Apple Day, and secured sponsors for tbe "Trees for Canada!' carnpaign . The most remarkable thing, VIOLA TEBBLE Scuse sait], is that Tebble does not bave any sons involved in scouts - she is the mother of tbree girls.
