PAGE A2, WHITBY FREE PRESS, ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL, AUGUST 3,1988 The phone is always ringing at the Chamber office By Brian Winter The phone is always ringing at the Chamber of Commerce. During the average day there can be any number of requests to handle the person wanting directions to places in Whitby, the phone number of Family Kartways or other attractions, the location of a local business, or general information on the town itself. People intending to move to Whitby ask the Chnnber for information on schools, recreation facilities, municipal government and housing. The Cham ber has a package of information which is sent to newcomers or persons wishing to move to Whitby. Another item often requested is a list of industries, for persons wanting to do business in Whitby or seeking jobs. A number of times during the year the Chamber receives complaints from consumers about som nlocal businesses. These calls are referred to our director in charge of consumer liaison who gets the information about the complaint and tries to bring the two parties together to work out an acceptable solution. The Chamber is not a lawyer service, but in most cases it has been able to resolve consumer complaints successfully. For several years a director of the Chamber has reviewed applications for loans under the Student Venture and Youth Venture Capital programs. If the student is judged by the chamber representative to have enough knowledge and business sense to be able to pay back the loan, his project is usually approved. These programs are designed to provide money for students to start summer businesses. Student Painters are among the Student Venture Capital projects. Another duty of the Chamber of Commerce is to stamp and sign certificates of origin for industries exporting goods from Canada. Two Whitby industries have made regular use of this service, which is required by government regulations. The Whitby Chamber of DOWNTOWN WHITBY Business Improvement Area 105 Mary St. W., Whitby 666-4189 Congratulations to the Chamber of Commerce on another milestone. Commerce office, located in the Whitby Centennial Building, 416' Centre St. S.. is open Monday through Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. The phone number is 668-4506. A message from the president, Bob Richardson The Whitby Chamber of Commerce has played an active rle in the economic development of Whitby over the past 60 years. It is essential that the Chamber of Commerce continues to be active in the development of the business sector of our vital community and it will do so. We need the participation and involvement of all businesses located throughout our town in order that we, as a group, can see that positive action, with respect to economie growth, can take place. We can and will take a pro-active role when it comes to working with our town officials, member of the provincial government, and members of the federal govem- ment. There has been tremendous growth in the residential sector of Whitby and, as a result of this growth, the business sector can only prosper if it is properly planned and responds to the needs of our community as a whole. In addition, the tourist potential has grown enormously in the past five years. It is up to the business sector to ensure that the tourists are treated with respect and courtesy when they visit our town. Your Chamber of Commerce will be working very diligently in the future towards making Whitby an attractive place for tourists to visit and I do hope that individual business concerns in Whitby. work hard in making visitors feel welcome in our community. I would also like to mention the fact that the Whitby Junior Chamber of Commerce has played an active role over the years in making Whitby a great place to live and work and as well as taking an active role on the executive and board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce. With good planning and active leadership, the Whitby Chamber of Commerce will see even more exciting times ahead in the next sixty years, and I hope you will join the "Chamber Team" in order to make things happen. Chamber to hold all-candidates'forum By Brian Winter Since 1988 is a municipal election year, the Whitby Chamber of Commerce will be helping the citizens of the town make their choice with the presentation of an all-candidates' forum. Until recently the Chamber of Commerce handled all municipal election forums and the Junior Chamber (Jaycees) handled the federal and provincial elections. However, with the large number of candidates in the field, the Chamber and Junior Chamber shared the duties last election with two forums, one sponsored by each organization to cover all positions being contested. It is likely the Chamber and Junior Chamber will share the duties again this year when the election forums are held in October. Further details will be published in the local newspapers at election time. associates limited 142-B Byron Street North, Whitby L1N 4M9 WHITBY 666-1300 TORONTO 686-0335 Deloitte Haskinsi-Seils Chartered Accountants "Creative Business Advisors" Personal and Corporate Tax Planning/Services, Computer Software Selection and Implementation John Patte, BA.Sc,CA Director, Tax Services Gordon Sedgewick, FCA Partner Bank of Commerce Building, 2 Simcoe St. S.
