PAGE 10, WHTrBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3, 1988 No bottle drive in Whitbynnow siutinbu ane tepulcyo cletng owoySot By Debbie Luchuk A boy estimated to be about nine years of age has been posing as a boy scout and asking for pop bottles from residents in the Thickson Rd. S. and Applewood Ct. area in east Whitby, according to one of the residents. Judy Neimann, of Applewood Ct., was called upon by the boy on Tuesday night last week for contributions to a "boy scout bottle drive." She suspected that the boy was not a scout because he was not wearing a uniform (as scouts are required to do when out fundraising) and the scouting organization does not carry out fundraising ventures in the summer. Neimann herself has been "heavily involved" in the scouting movement for a few years. "It's obvious some other people had gotten involved, as he had three pop bottles in his hand. "I questioned him, asked him who his leader is. He said he did not know who his leader was. He said he belonged to a different scouts," relates Neimann. "I asked him: "If I called the police, would they find out that you were not really collecting for the scouts?" He said yes, and I told him to go home," Neimann said. Neimann felt that calling the police was not appropriate in this SHADE TREES situation but wanted the public not collecting for the Boy Scouts te be aware that this youngster is of Canada. LETTER: Smokers object FROM PAGE 6 banned smoking. We feel that there are may other factors contributing to many of today's ills, including automobile emissions, toxic waste dumping, acid rain, and general pollution. However, these things are ignored by the government. Since smokers are a largely unorganized, unrepresented group in the government, they have quiety decided to place the ills of the world on our shoulders. It is time for smokers and sympathetic non-smokers to show theiir leaders that they do object to what is going on. We are presently coflecting names on petiitions, in order to present them to our politicians. If you would be interested in signing, or having a petition sent to you, we would ask that you drop us a line. Don't forget to include your name and address. We would also like to point out, just because these laws may not have affected your area yet, don't feel too secure. Many municipalities and cities are awaiting the effects, before deciding if they will follow suit. Yours very truly,. "It'Il be something to remember," said Jennifer Tripp, 14, of Brooklin, member of the lst Brooklin pathfinders. Her sister, Janis, said "meeting new friends, learning different languages and doing things on patrol" were among the highlights for her. "It was really fun," said Jennifer Stein, 13, of Whitby, a member of the lst Whitby pathfinders, who recalls the concerts and talent show as highlights, and the food as "alright." She's hoping to go to the next international camp 10 years from now - but as a pathfinder leader. About 2,500 girl guides and 500 leaders from many countries attended the July 12-22 camp in Echo Valley Provincial Park. The girls found that the Durham Region pins they took with them were popular when the pin exchanges with other groups were made.
