The baby contest is extremely popular, and fair president Elspeth Me Culloch said that they sometimes have to turn people away because there are so many babies entered. The horticultural competitions include judging of vegetables, fiowers and arrangements. Under "culinary art entry fee" there are 42 classes including prizes for various breads, pies, cakes,* jam, preserves and muffins. There are also special prizes awarded by various food manufacturers for the best dark fruit cake, chocolats cake, brownies, butter tarts, ,apple pie favorite chocolate deissert and tomato soup cake. There are also several baking and craft categories for children to enter. The Oshawa-Whitby fair, a showcase for local agricultural- and rural talent, will b>eý extremely entertaining to, those who are urbanites looking for interesting and entertaining things te do as a faniily in an outdoor setting, McCulloch said. Durham police get RIDE grant The Durham Regional Police force received $48,600 from the Province last week te help its efforts te Reduce Drinking and Driving Everywhere (RIDE). The money was presented to police chief Jon Jenkins and Police commission chairman Bob Attersley by Durham Centre MPP Allan Furlong. The money is- part of a $2-million fund set aside by the Liberal government to assist municipal forces with RIDE. The $2 million is only part of $14 million te be spent during the next two years te make RIDE year-round and province-wide. Jenkins said the Durham force receive 'd 80 per cent of the money it had asked for. The money will be used teward staff overtime (excluding court time); -public aWareness activities; in-service training- approved ALERT equipment; the cost of vehicles; the Promotion of impaired driving enforcement activities (up te 15 per cent Of -the total cost of activities). The Province has allocated $1.'6 million te the program te date in Ontanio.
