"It's been nothing but fun and exciting," said a beaming Dave Puhalskçi, owner and presidlent of the dealership, about the move.to Bayly earlier this year from the, old location at Hwy. 2 and Church St. Nissan now bas about 200 dealerships in Canada, according to Ryota (Roy) Hoshino, Nissan Canada president on hand for the officiai opening. "So far, everybody is happy, in terms of sales volume," said Hoshino of the new dealership. "We've doubled in volume," said Puhalsi, referring to both vehicle sales and âervice. The new location is about four times the size of the former, and that additional space was necessary to accommodate needed parking space and more staff. Free Press photc Future trucks to be lighter, last longer Tomorrow's trucks will be lighter, will last longer and will be more fuel efficient, according to Kurt Beyeler, president of Volvo GM Canada Heavy Truck Corp. Beyeler spoke to the Durham Region Manufacturers Associa-, tion's Showcase '88 at the Metro East Convention Centre recently. "Tomorrow's trucks are constantly moving ahead of us, putting us behind the eight-ball," said Beyeler. Fie said future designs for trucks will make them more aerodynamic which, in turn, will make them more fuel efficient. "And not at the cost of the environment," he added. Other advances will also make the truck last longer, includinff single wheels replacing the dual back wheels now found on most trucks. "That will lower the weight. Some of those tires weigh 800 lbs. It will also help improve fuel efficency." i3eyeler indicated that by the year 1992 an engine will last for 600,000 miles, and 800,000 miles by 1997. "By the beginning of the next century, engine durability will be one million miles," said Beyeler. Cab designs will also be redesigned making the interior "erelatively softer." There will be better retaining measures and fewers levers and knobs near the drivers knees and head. said Beyeler. Also speaking to the association was Gerry St. Germain, Canada's transport minister. He told the audience that the free trade agreement between Canada and the United States will actually strengthen the Auto Pact. "The Canadian automotive industry is very successful," said St. Germain who noted that the North American content requirement in the free trade agreement will forc~e foreign automobile manufacturers to -Purchase more parts in Canada. .He also said deregulation of the truck industry will make the industry more competitive.
