Seniors card increasiLngly popular It started about six years ago as an idea, hatched by Scar- borough council memnbers and developed by marketing coun- sellor Bob Brophy, to aid local seniors. And once put in place, it has now*spread across the country - the Seniors of Canada membership card for those 55 and over, offering cardholders dis- counts on travel, hoels, shops, restaurants and many other services. 'It seemned so popular they decided to extend it across the country," says Ray Lunn, mana- ger of the Durham Region area for the card. It's growing in laaps and bounds , says Lunn, noting there are now 400,000 membars in Canada. A membership card costs $8 a year, or $17 for three years. Lunn estimates that the average use will realize savings of $600 to $700 a year with the card. Lunn says the card is particularly baneficial to those living on fixed incomes. He says work is about to begin on a directory of Durham estab- lishments which will honor the card. Directories, once completed,ýI' will then ha mailed toalal seniors" living in Durham Region. The amount of discount varies- from 10Qto 60 par cent. To obtain . a card, send cheque (for either one or three-, years, or for one or two persons) nama and address, date of birth to: Seniors of Canada, 77 Progressý, Ave., Scarborough, Ont. M1P< 2Y.
