"There is no building slowdowln in Whitby," said the 'mayor reacting to the monthly building report from the public works de- partment. The report shows that $23,984,572 worth of permits were issued during May. .The bulk of that was permits for bouses which totalled $20,251»92. Commercial permits totalled $2.1 million while industrial permits totalled $1.2 million. According to Attersley, the commercial and industrial figures will be given a big boost in June when the Town is expected to issue $17 million worth of industrial and commercial per- niits. Some of. the permits will include: Sony of Canada adding a $3.5.million addition to their location on Tricont Ave.; Mnca Lahs, $3.2-million interior reno- vation; $750,000 for the construction of an indoor soccer stadium on Sunray St.; $4 million construction of offices and retail stores at the southeast corner of Rossland Rd. and Garden St. The Town issued permits for- 198 single family dwellings during May. There is still no interest in apartments, according to Attersley, who adds there will still be no interest in that area in the future. "No one is showing the slightest interest in apartments," said Attersley. The Town bas issued $50.9 million worth of permits to date in 1988. At this same time last year, $62.3 million worth of permnits bad been issued. The Town collected $166,803 in permit fees during May to bring the total to, $347,826. Ride for Sight June 11-12 By"Debbie .Luchuk Three thousand bikers are expected to take part locally in teannual Ride for Sight on June 11-12, to raise funds for research into a cure for retinitis pigmentosa. The fundraising motorcycle ride event is tbe largest known motorcycle rally for a common cause, according to Deborah Raines, local coordinator of the event. Locally, the bikers will ineet on Valley Faim Drive in Pickering at 10:15 a.m. on June 11, and will proceed from there along Hwy. 23 north. The bikers will meet in Minden for a weekend of races, dances, barbecues and rides witb other bikersfrom Ontario. The event is mun by volunteers, and ail money raised goes to research into a cure for retinitis pimntosa. Because tbere bas been a great deal of progress in the iast few years, Hospitai News says that a cure may be found very soon. Studies are ongoing at the Hospital for Sick Childien to find a cure for both formns of RP. The RP Eye Research Foundation bas provided $349,952 to , this research, and much of this money was raised by the Ride for Sight. There are approimately 10,000 Canadians witb retinitis pigmentosa, and 100,000 tbat have been biinded by RP, according to Ramnes.
