PAGE 26, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 18 1988 Bryce Cooper Elections for the student council of 1988-89 brought about a small scandal between the school newspaper and some of the candidates, and even some students. The student school newspaper, The Final Word, wrote a review of each of the candidate's speeches that were addressed to the student body. The Final Word also printed copies of the speeches. However, this proved to be a bad idea. Some of the speeches turned out to be shortened or altered when printed and the candidates affected were very angry. It was also stated that the review appeared to be very negative to all candidates except for a few. Eventually, 'The Rebuttal' was printed.1 In 'The Rebuttal,' candidates who were misquoted and criticized were able to state their position and condemn The Final Word. Letters written by students were also printed in The Rebuttal expressing their anger with The Final Word. Our school newspaper is supposed to boost school spirit. However, in the election edition, it only demoralized the majority of people. It takes a lot of spirit to run for a position on student council and, good or bad, each candidate shouldbe given support. Despite all the controversy we do have a new student council executive for next year. Greg Dunn is our new president, Dave (Bob) Hunter is vice president, Neil Stuchbury is the program chairman and assistant program chairman is Natasha Prasad. Applications are still being accepted for treasurer and secretary. We are all looking forward to next year! Anderson held yet another successful fashion show. Students and staff parti'cipated together in the production of this year's event, .and both modeled new spring lines from local retailers. Congratulations to all. and even the young children- of the faculty who participated. As May is drawing to a close, sports are winding up with LOSSA and DYSSAA finals. Good luck to all the teams and individuals! Remember we are still looking for ideas for MOGA Madness. tDhI (ù Liz Aruta There have been mixed emotions lately at DO'C for a couple or reasons. One is that it was Spirit Week last week. Events filling up the course of the week were intended to raise the morale and spirit of the student body. It began with the dance and ended with the talent show. In between the two was the annual air band contest, 'It's Your Day' day and 'Hat and Shades' day. As usual the air band contest was a great success. The chemistry between the acts and audience was tremendous! After judging, a student was randomly picked from each grade level. These students were treated to a day of royal treatment. Free lunches were given as well as the privilege of not wearing the uniform. The Tbursday after saw a sea of sunglasses and hats. Though the day was somewhat bleak, the atmosphere wasn't. Finally to end it all, DO'C's talents were displayed for all to see at the talent competition. Spirit Week is intended as a diversion dúring the 'waiting to alleviate the waiting for summer.' With the energetic smiles and laughter on everyone's faces, it looks as if the week's events did the job once again. Special thanks go out to the student council executive and the teachers who organized the week's events. Another reà son for such crazy feelngs at DO'C is the thought of exams. Exam schedules have been posted and already faces are dropping. But the again, the mere mention of exams leads to the thought that school will end in the near future --in the very near future. For the most part, students have generally felt excitement because of the performance of our school teams. It seems that our senior boys' soccer team could take the OFSAA trophy with ease. A recent warm-up tournament proved that the boys have what it takes to win. not only does the team have a strong defense, but the midfield and forward lines have shown their scoring abilities. Boys' soccer is not the only team doing well. Our girls have made it to the LOSSA playoffs. Hopefully the success of the boys will rub off on the girls and the girls will repeat their last year's performances. Good luck to both teams. Ann Dunn This week at Trafalgar was an example at the many talented girls at our school. The track team competed at LOSSA against 22 other high schools in Durham Region. The relay teams placed first in the 4-by-100m and third in the 4-by-400m relay. The members of the relay teams were Nikki Holenkirk, Giselle Mungal, Corine Murray, Anya Smith and Stephanie Taylor. Smith placed second in both the 200m and 400m and first in the javelin. The highlight of the day was Stephanie Taylor's record-breaking run in the 400m. She owns all of the LOSSA records for the 200m run. As well as breaking her record, she placed first in the 200m. Wendy Primeau placed sixth in the 3000m race and Lara Vaarre also placed sixth in the discus. These seven students qualified to represent Trafalgar in the DYSSAA track meet at York University. We hope that sports will continue to be a strong part of school life at Trafalgar. Gayle Snyder Congratulations to all of our track and field members who participated at the LOSSA meet last week. First for Henry was our midget boys' relay team of Kevin Rowland, Scott Williamson, Rick Lambie and Dion Harrioth; Kelly Joseph won the junior girls'800m and Jennifer Cooper won the junior girls' 3000m. This week will be dominated .by our very exciting, action-packed Spirit Week. This will be the second Spirit Week of the year and the memories will be sure to last a lifetime. Monday, we had our grand opening Spirit Week ceremony in which we introduced "Spunky, The Spirit Week Clown," had a 'Blindfold vs. Blindfold Truth or Consequence Pie-throwing Contest' and the introduction of the slaves preserved for Slave Day, Thursday. Tuesday we had a surfin bird, Henry day. Also Donaldson, Mr. Legs 1987, Craig Donaldson will give up his reign to another young hopeful in the Mr. Legs contest 1988.
