In the seventh and final, gaine of the tournament, the unde- feated Whitby and Detroit GDP teains met, with Detroit the heavy favorites to win the championship. But the Whitby team, playing its 9lst game of the season, had other ideas and a game plan that worked to perfection. "We just checked themn crazy," said coach Bob Harrison. 1I don't think they knew what hit them." The resuit was a 5-O victory for Whitby. Whitby defenceman Chris Kerr, who -would later be named the tournament's Most valuable player, scored on a slapshot from the blueline in the first period and Whitby neyer looked back. Kerr scored again in the second while Paul Gray, Bilan Crilly and Bryan Crouch later added singles. Meanwhile Josh Evans and Bilan Harrison, who Split the goaltending duties in every game, were splendid. "Detroit had ail kinds of pressure on us. But the goalies came up big," said coach Harrison. "They kept us in it. They made some saves I couldn't believe." Whitby's goalies were both named most valuable players for the gaine. Harrison said the teain reluctantly passed up the Whitby minor hockey banquet on the weekend to continue - n the tournament, so, that victory was rewarding and a "fitting way to finish the season." The Whitby teain, which boasts three players - Darry Lewis, Gray and Crouch - who had at least 125 points for the season and several others not far behind, began play in the prestigious 36-team tournament on the previous weekend. Vinent was named MVP as Whitby rolled te a 19-O win in the opening gaine April 16 against Meadowvale. Paul Gray got MVP honors in the second game against Flamborough, won by Whitby 8-2. Andrew Stamnes got the winning goal and was named gaine MVP as Whitby won its third gaine 3-2 over Lorne Park. On April 23, Whitby resumed action with a 4-2 decision over Cooksville, Lewis figuring in on Whitby's Glen Beauchamp has qualified for this year's Summer Olymnpics with -a first place finish at the Canadian senior mens national judo championship held in Hamilton Iast weekend. Beauchamp, 25, qualified for the summer gaines in Seoul, Korea, by defeating Hartley Jones ail four goals. "We were down 2-1 going into the third but came back with three straight te win it," said Harrison. Crouch scored tWice in the following 5-1 win over Wheatfield, N.Y. Harrison will be coaching at bantain level next 'year while almost ail his players froin this year will move up te major novice. Erwin Winkier for the men and Rhonda Cocker for the ladies were singles' "A" champions at the recent Whitby "Y' Badminton Club toumnament held at Henry Street Hi-gh School. Winkler and Allan Kerr teamed to capture the men's double "A" title while Helen Kwan and Sara Houghton were first for the "A"' ladies. The mixed doubles "A" title was captured by Erwin Winkler and Rhonda Cocker. Runner-ups in "A" were Geof Williams in men's singles, Marg Smith in ladies' singles, Lissett Payne and Marg Smith in ladies' doubles, Rob Adair and Geoif Williams in men's doubles, Geoif' SEE PAGE 23 Brereton, Perroni set records at DYSSAA By BRENDAN REINBOLDT Both Henry and Anderson track teams had good resuits in a LOSSA meet held April 13 at Civic Field in Oshawa, with 10 Anderson coin- petitors and four from Henry ad- vancing to the DYSSAA Tri-meet held April 20 a tYork University. Top finishers from Anderson at DYSSAA included Andy Brereton who placed first with a new record in the midget 50-metre run and second in the long jump event. Brereton had placed first in both events at LOSSA. Suzanne Perroni of Anderson established a new record in the junior girls 50m hurdles. the Saiiit ceà u Dn~te WULn atLOLSSA, along with a first in the long jump and a third in the 400m run. Henry, despite having one of the smallest teams at LOSSA, had an impressive showing with three of their four athietes placing at DYSSAA. Henry's Donna Humphrey placed third in the junior girls' high jump. Kelly Caldwell placed third in the 50m hurdles and was fourth in the midget high jump. Julie Parker placed fifth in both the 50m hurdle and 50m dash events. On Saturday, April 30, the Neil MacNeil meet wilI be held in Toron- to and both of Whitby's high school track teams will compete. Motomura wins twiee in Brampton Andrew Motomura of Whitby recently had two first-place finishes in the sixth annual Tora judo championships in Brampton. Motomura, a member of Oshawa's Formokan Judo Club, was first for juveniles 'under 64 kg and first for 16-20-year-olds under 65 kg.--. THE WHITBY petite B -ringette team were league and playoff champions, and won tournaments in Oshawa, Ajax, Warsaw and Campbellford, losing only in Ottawa, for an outstanding 1987-88 season.
