PAGE 20, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27, 1988 Large display in Thursday's St. Mark'squit show St. Mark's United Church Women are presenting their eight annual quilt show, Thursday April 28, from 2 to 9 p.m., at the church located at the corner of Centre St. S. and Colborne St. in Whitby. Admission price is $2.50, or by special UCW quilt show envelope, generously filled. To be seen will be 50 quilts, never before on display at St. mark's. Fifteen of the quilts were completed in 1988, demonstrating a continuing interest in the special craft. The subtle tones in Doris Gryll's "Pot o' Gold" quilt are particularly appealing. Joan Gee made a blue "Boston Common" quilt as a wedding gift for her daughter Carol. And there is a signature block in Pauline Toeijes' original embroidery and lace design _another wedding gift. Also on display will be a coverlet, intricately woven from home-dyed and spun yarn, by Mary Blagden Foster between 1847 and 1869. Another 19th century quilt came from West Arran Township in Bruce County. In 1908, to commemorate the building of its new church, the Myrtle congregation made a signature quilt and presented it to the minister, M. Edwy Eratus Howard and his wife. Their son was minister at the Whitby church (now St. Mark's) at the time of church union in 1925. Many years later, their grad-daughter Mary Howard came from Toronto and returned the 1908 quilt to the Myrtle congregation. At least five quilts, in various sizes, designs and prices, will be for sale by their owners. Again this year in the church parlor will be a great many crib quilts, quilted pictures and small quilted articles. In the nursery, one or two St. Mark's quilters will invite visitors to try their hand at quilting a colorful strip quilt and answer any questions. Visitors can vote for their favorite quilt before. leaving the show. The .program .lso entitles visitors to discounts at bdth Whitby Fabrics and Ye Olde Silver Thimble in downtown Whitby.
