A new 5-hp model bas also been added to the lime. The bass boat engine, designated the XR4, bas a displacement of 142.2 cubic inches- cornpared to the 121 c.i. engine it replaces, tbe XR2. The new model features loop charged induction , a 60-degree V configuration. and oil injection. Compared with the XR2 which it replaces, the new bass engine offers these advantages: * Recommended rpm range at wide-open throttle bas been reduced from 5500/6000 to 5000/5500. This refiects a change in the power curve at the "low end" for better durability and improved acceleration. * The gear ratio is 1.78 to 1 rather than 2 to 1; the effect is improved acceleration. hydrodynamic gearcase so underwater drag is reduced. for better performance. For greater operator convenience, a power trim switch bas been mounted on the engine cowl so it can be, raised or lowered either from the helin or stern of the boat. In addition, to complenient the performance characteristics of the XR4, a new line of Quicksilver propellers bas been developed. Mercury's new 100-hp unit is a four-cylinder-in-line with a dispiacement of 105 cubic inches. It bas a recommended wide open throttle rpm range of 5000 to 5500 and a gear ratio of 2.07 to 1. The Merc 100's design incorporates loop scavenging, which offers exceptional fuel economy and performance. The new model features oil injection with a 1.45-gallon oil c:: xi w tank mounted on the engine. The systein is gear-drive mechanically froin the crankshaft and miàxes oil at a 100 to 1 ratio at idle and 50 to 1 at wide-open throttle; oil delivery varies not only in relation to crankshaft speed but also relative to the throttle position. Mercury developed the first 100-hp outboard in 1961. At that time it was the niost powerful production outboard ever built. Mercury last marketed a 100-hp model in 1969. The new Merc 5 bas the saine displacement as the one-cylinder 4-hp model introduced several months ago. Like the Merc 4, the Merc 5 bas both 360-degree steering as well as full forward- neutral-reverse gearshift. The two models differ only in horsepower and in the fact that the Mere 4 has an integral 2.5-litre gas tank, while the Mere 5 cornes with a three-gallon remote gas tank. The Merc 5 also boasts underwater exhaust throuth the propeller hub to bury noise and fumes far astern) capacitor discharge ignition 'o)r sure, fast starts, and a s-phned rubber prop hub that acts like a shock absorber to prevent damage to the drive train when striking an under water object (it eliminates the need for a shear pin). The Mercury line for 198E ranges froin 2.2 horsepower tc, the Laser XRI rnodel, the only production outboard ' on the market with electronic fuel. injection. Numerous improvements have been made to the'ex:isting models. The V-135, V-150, V-175 and V-200 have new cylinder heads manufactured by the "lost foam" process. This high tech casting procedure* produces cylinder heads with 40 fewer parts than the- heads they replaced. Lost foam technology also results in a stiffer head, which, in tum, provides a rnuch longer life for the head gasket. The Mercury V-6 engines also have a new 'high volume/low pressure fuel pump, similar to the one introduced last year on the Laser and 70/80/90 models. It minimizes the problems of vapor lock and improves the fuel flow at idle. The Merc 45, an engine popular with.walleye fishermen, will be available from the factory in 1988 witb a tiller handle, electric start and power trim. Previously power trim was available for the tiller handle, electric start Merc 45 only as a dealer installed accessory. Tlhe Mercury 20 and 25-horsepower mnodela have been extensively redesigned. They have new top and bottoni cowls with new latches and seals, resulting in improved cowl durability, reduced noise and more resistance to water intrusion. Changes on the 6, 8, 9.9, 20 and 25 include: for iniproved corrosion resistance, carburetor fasteners will be miade of stainless steel, while the carburetor throttle shaft will be chfrome plated; a new alloy will be used for the aluniinurn propellers designed for these engines Wo provide greater strength and durability; new plastic fuel tanks replace the metal tanks of past years, resulting in greater resistance to corrosion. 20 YEARS 0F BOAT HAULING EXPERIENCE h1ydraulie trailer service -.air ride equipment -local & long distance -4oad sharing available- BALSDON TRUCKING LTDè (416) 683-5917 (YARD) FAX: (416) 839-5885 (RES.)
