If you catch a big one, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters want to hear about it! Their new record fish registry, to. recognize the iargest fish iegaliy angled from Ontario *waters, will begin accepting entries *on April 15; 1988. * As Ontario's first officiai fish registry, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Ontario Record Fish Registry wili recognize 47 species of game and nongame fish caught in Ontario waters. The registry wili be operated by the On- tario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAR) and sponsored by Moison Breweries in conjunction with the "Molson Export" Big Fish Contest. Complete details on the OFAH Ontario record *fish registry program are printed on every entry form for the 1988 "Molson Export" Big Fish Contest. "For years the OFAH has been e-"receiving requests for information on Ontario's record bass, muskies, pike, salmon and trout, " says Lance Maies, provincial coordinator of fish and wildlife services. "But there has been no centr~al recor- dkeeping body people could turn to. With this program we are respon- ding to the demands of Ontario's 2.5 million angiers. And by giving of-, ficial status to record -fish of 47 species, angiers will be encouraged to fish for nongame species they may not have previously con- sidered." Anglers who believe their catch is larger than the entry requirement or larger than the current record for the species (shown on the entry blank), should take their fish to a Ministry of Natural Resources of- fice to have the species confirmed and the weight, iength and girth of the fish measured by a fisheries ex- pert. A letter from the district manager verifying the findings is required. ? The angler must then photograph the fish and complete the OFAH On- tario record fish registry entry form. Ail documentation is the sub- mitted to the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. The angier must keep the fish frozen in his/her possession until requested by the OFAH Ontario record fish registry officiais. At year end, al daims for new records wiii be analyzed by the OFAH, and anglers and media notified. For each fish judged to be a new Ontario record, three fiberglass replicas wiil be made by award- winning taxidermist Ron Reynolds of Bath, -Ontario. (Replicas, are a modern alternative to taxidermy and are considered to be superior in quality and detail to a traditionai mount.) One replica wili go to the angier, and two wiii go on per- manent public display.
