Free Press photo Anderson CVI rugby players depart for -Wales Forty-three students and five staff members froin Anderson CVI will leave for Wales Thursday to carry on a sporting and cultural exchange that began more than 10 years ago. The -mostly Gr. 9 and 10 boys fror? Anderson will get together with students froin three schools in Wales and engage in nine rugby games, just part of the activity of a visit that will last from March 24 to April 4. Each student, paying $600 for the trip after more than $6,000 was- collected in various fundraising projects to offset costs, will. be. billeted with a faxily in Wales. "You develop good personal relationships," says Ron Pither, who, until this year, bas been coach since 1976 of both the junior and senior rugby teams from Anderson which are ever dominant in local leagues. Pither organized the first trip by an Anderson teain, to Ireland in 1977, using hotels. He found billeting was better, and has since used that accommodation method on ail visits, every two years, to the British Isles ( 1987 to B.O.). The visita are returned every other year. "We've hosted 37 different foreign schools in rugby at Anderson," says Pither. Its quite an experience for the ldds," he says. 'When we go to their homes, people treat them, incredibly well. "Every day we have an activity, either historical or cultural in- nature," he says of the visita. Mike Kennelly was an Anderson rugby player who went on the trip in 1979 and 1981. Now he's heading for Wales, on his third visit, as a staff member. He also coaches Anderson's midget teain. Pither now just coaches the senior teain, defending LOSSA and DYSSAA champions, which he expects to be again strong this year, as will be traditional rival Dunbarton, Ontario champions when, they up-ended top-seeded Anderson. Mike Steel, a former Dunbarton coach, will coach the junior teani while Don Tilk handies the junior second teain. Mike Aggett will help out with the coaching of Whitby minor peewee B's allowed only three goals in five ga;nes as they won the Markham Winterhawk tournament held March 12-14. Strong 'defensive' play and outstanding goaltending by Roy Kennedy powered the Whitby teain, coached by Bob Burgess and Dave Duncan and m'anaged by Ed Wood. Whitby defeated Bramalea 7-0, Oshawa 3-1, Thornhill 4-1, Brami- pton 7-0 in the semi-final and a second midget team. Last year, Anderson had 116 boys playing rugby. Several move on to play for Oshawa Vikings, -a power in Ontario rugby. The school exchange visit marks the preparation for the new rugby season, which gets Markham 2-1 in the final. Teain members are Scott Burgess, Kevin Clementson, Jeff Duncan, Andrew Jamieson, Roy Kennedy, Mark Lanegger, Andy Mathers, underway April 20. But Pither says the "real education" froin the trip is not only on the rugby field. "The kids always enjoy them- selves. "For some it may be, the only chance they get to get overseas." Ben Newell, B.J. Prout, Jasopn Peddle, Kirk Rodrigues, Carlos IRoebuck, Brodie Richards, Vance Stevenson, Brandon Wall and Stephen Wood.
