Crighton, a four-year member of the Whitby Yacht Club, Wold club members last -Wednesday night. Ho was readying bis AIberg 30 and brushing up on his .celestial navigation W., preparo for the Gulf Streain. The race was Wo start on June 13, with competiWors expected Wo be in Newport on June 10. On the morning of June 9 Orighton was in Toronto. Ris Alberg was still moored at Whitby.harbor. 'Whon I got back Wo the harbor and brought my boat around Wo the Town's boat launch I wasn't watching and ran aground. It ,was embarrassing when I had Wo tell the guys at the marina I was stuck whon I had been telling them I was off Wo Bermuda Wo compote," said Cighton. It took an hour Wo get the boat out of the mud and CrighWon was ready for bis trip W Newport. But bis next obstacle was tho car ho borrowed to transport the boat clown. "The car had an oul leak and I was putting in a quart of oul every 50 miles. Finally the car just filled with smoke. The problem was a rusty oul pan," Crighton Wold bis audience. It was now June il and CrighWon had reached Newport but ho couldn't find the boatyard where ho was Wo launch bis boat. That problem took a while to solve but finally ho had the boat I However, that niàht, Crighton met one of the race organizers Who helped him te the point, hé was allowed tp enter the race. Ilow Cfghton w4s. ready. It - was a Saturday a#id Crighton recalls -the weather being miserable. "The weather just kept getting worse and worse. I didn't feel comnfortable leaving the boat and going below We eat or sleep se I stayed in the cockpit for two days." On the third day out the weather 'had improved, enough that Crighton feit safe We go down We the cabin for food and Idecided We have one more look around before I went to lie clown and when I went up We the dock all I could see was a. skyscraper. I finally realized this was a- container ship bearing down on me.- I believe if I hadn't looked around thon, I wouldn't be here Wonight , said CrighWon who was able to steer bis boat out of the path of the ship. "Ail I saw was this steel Wall as it went past me. [t took me a while We calm clown after that."- His fifth night out-was one of the most beautiful ho had ever witnessed. "There were no clouds and al. the stars were out. That is a night that can nover be taken away from me." On bis sixth day, Crighton spotted Bermuda and ho enterod St. Georges port at 2 p.m. Ho stayed a week in Bermuda where ho was . joined by his co-skipper Jayne Webber. Two hours out on the return trip, Crighton's boat ippod a sail. It took five hours to get the boat back We Bermuda for repairs.
