After a marathnn barizaining session, the board and the Durham Elementary Teachers Association <DETA) reached a tentative set- tiement on 'Dec. 5, although ,neither side will discuss the conten- ts of the agreement until after the teachers and trustees have cast their ballots. According to personnel director Harold Nelson, trùstees could vote on the pact as early as Jan. 25. T fiis is* the second tentative agreement between- DETA and the board. The first, although san- ctioned by trustees, was narrowly rejected by. the- 700 teachers who chose, to vote, making it the first tim~e teachers in the public board voted againsta tentative set- tiement.11 The rejected offer includeda 4.9. per cen t salary increase across the board in a one-year 'contract.
