The team, skating against the toughest competition in Canada, qualified for the gold finals after placing first in their qualifying, * flight. "They were a litieý nervous the first time," says coach Cathy Dalton. "'But they relaxed a' bit in the finals." In the finals Ice Fyre skated strongiy to earn-marks as high as 5.6 (6.0 is a perfeet mark). Despite the big win for the senior team, Dalton noted the problems and areas which need im- provement. "The footwork was a bit off, the, lines have to be streightened and thèe blocks have to g et lined Up, " she says. "There are also some changes I bave to make with the routine." Dalton will know more about the changes after the upcoming - weekend when the team travels to Unionville for another competition. The Whitby team beat two of Canada's best senior teams: the Lavai Pirouettes, last year 's Canadian champions, who placed third, and the -Kitchener-Waterloo Kweens, last year's runner-up in Canada, who placed fourth in Buf- falo. Whitby's novice team, the Ice Angels, experîenced difficulties in their qualifying performance. Free Press photo skated much stronger in the Silver finals to place fourth. "They (the Angeis) were realiy nervous and their inexpérience in a large arena showed," says Angels' coach Debbie Smith. "They had a lot of unexpected fails, fails they neyer had in prac- tice, " says Smith. She says she was disappointed in the judging for the finals but not with the way the team skated. "I wasn't displeased with the way they skated on Sunday (the finals), but I was a littie diWpleased with the way they finished, " she says. Smith hopes to find better results in the competition'this weekend in Unionville. Whitby's pre-novice team, the Ice Pix, also .encountered some dif- ficulties while skating their qualifying performance. "They were terrified. It was a big arena and they becamne disorien- ted," says Diane Cornelison, coach of the Ice Pix. The Pix placéd seventli in their quaiifying performance, keeping themn out of all further competition. "I'm very proud of them," says Cornelison who thinks they'ii do better in the Unionville comi- petition. "They have somne éxperience now and they'know what they're doing wrong. They'll be alright," she says. Whitby's masters' team, the, Ice Ages, skated a fine performance,, earning themn a silver medal. Ail teams will be performing here on Feb. 6 in Whitby's own, com-ý petition. Campbell seeks Pacifie titie Chris Campbell of Whitby's Kiichi-Sai Judo Club will seek the Pacific National title this weekénd in British Columnbia. Campbell, 15, aims for first in th e minus-59 kg. category, says coach Dan Gribben. Campbell finished second last year and has been un- defeated in his class since last year's event. Campbell is one of 12 members of the Ontario judo team, and will have all his expenses paid"for the tipý west.
