Five receive burns in eollIision 1Five people,, including two police officers, were treated for burns af- ter an OPP cruiser and a van collided on the 401, mast east of the Brock St. interchange.* .The driver of the van,, Heather Louise Schneider of 'Oshawa, remains i the burn unit at Welsley hospital. An OPP spokesman says' the police cruiser and van collided While the cruiser w as in pursuit of a traffic violator around 9:45 a..m., Suniday, Jan. 10. The cruiser, which *was travelling eastbound, was spun into the west- bound guardrail at which point the gas tank ruüptured, causing an ex- plosion. Both officers in the car had to break the car windows to exit. The flames spread to the van, with Schneider receiving serious burns. Schneider's i3-year-old son and another passenger in the vehicle were, taken to Whitby General Hospital and treated for minor bur- ns as were the two efficers. The collaboration ended 20 years later when Chaplin died in 1977 at the age of 87.-i Durlng those 20, years, James, a pianlst and' composer, helped Chaplin score music for ma,'ny of his silent films includlng 'A Dog's Life' and 'The Kld.' "Ilf Chaplin was stili alive he would *still be working. he had a- brain like a dynamo," says James, who along with bis wife Phyllis O'Reily, moved to Whitby from Englandlast July'. While living in England the two travelled the legnth of the British Charlie Chaplin.' The pair made the move to Whit- by to "'spend the winter of our lives with famlly," says. James. During bis 20Oyears working .with Chaplin, James would oft en receive a cail at bis home from Chaplin, then spend the next month at Chaplin's Vevey home at the foot of the Swiss Alps. S"Chaplin was a musical genius and he knew what he wanted from music, but he did not know how to play. He had no musical training although he could hear a whole or- chestra in his head and tell me exactly what he wanted," explains James. This, expectedly, led to many tense moments, with- James saying he often had to use physcology to get a point across to Chaplin. "If he had learned to play would have been great.
