WHITBY FREE PREffS, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6, 1988, PAGE 15 '87 REVIEW '87 REVIEW '87 REVIEW '687, REVJEW '87, REVIEW- Quest sehool open ing delayed after relocation After overcoming some problems, Quest Private Scbool made a move in 1987 from its down- town Witby location northwand to the outskirts of Brooklin. Quest bad been in operation for about five years at nented quarters at 220 Dundas- St. W. in Witby when plans to purchase a 46-acre parcel at }Iwy 2 and Regional Rd. 23 feil through. Instead, the school SUBDIVISION Whitby, coundil approved a sub- division agreement in May wbich will see 15 single family detached lots on the east side of Queen St., north of Cassels Rd. purcbased the Harlander property, 44 acres on Hwy. 12 just soutb of Brooklin, with hopes tbey would be able to move in at tbe end of June. Their plans.were to use the main bouse as administrative offices and Instail 12 portable classroorns until a permanent faciity could be used. But i September a stop work or- der was issued. According to Town administraton Bill Wallace, Quest was not complylng with various CRUELTY CHARGE A Brooklin couple was charged with cruelty to animals after On- tario . Humane Society officers found a numben of starving animals in their rural home Tuesday, May 19. Reflections of a Golden Age 1 . ' - - By MABEL M. MeCABE Every nesident of Witby sbould have asked Santa Claus to bning ac- tive care beds to Witby General Hospital for Chistmas. Maybe t he Holy Christ Cild could instill some common sense in the politicians wbo so cailously crossed us off the list. Do those people in Queen's Park not nealize how our community is growing? Tbey must ail be deaf, dumb and blind. 1 was a patient there in 1984 for six weeks and, believe me, those beds are a necessity. It is now tume for ail of us to band togethen and make theni give ns what we were prornised during the election. If we sit back we are in danger. I arn a senior who has a heart problem and do not look forward to a long ride to Oshawa or Ajax if I'm in trouble. I bad a gnandson born last year andbhe had to arrive in Oshawa. If anyone in our "city" bas an accident they could die because a trip to those outlying bospitals takes much longer tban to Whitby General. We are now a city that needs the benefits of on-location medical belp when needed. I believe that all our citizens want tbose beds and the ser- vice that they wiil give us. Many cannot have friends or farnily corne to see tbem if it entails a long drive. Others do nothave cars and at the present most of us bave to mnake arrangements for specialist care i Oshawa. This costs rnoney we can ili afford on top of the doctor's fee. It is a most ridiculous situation when wehave tbe facillty to remedy it if only the government wouid come across. I do flot have any argument with Oshawa or Ajax. Tbey are veny good hospitals but I think we need one of our own so mothens can be near lit- tde ones and visitons can cheen thein friends. If any of those men and wornen who cut us out bave gone day after day to visit a loved one they know how rnuch of a strain it is. Why put the extra strain of distance on our people? I hope eveny person living ini Whitby signed the petition tbat went anound. We have to get the attention of the Queen's Park folk and make them see we wiII not quit till we get proper hospital care right bere in our own city. I guess they are like the mule that the farmen bad to bit between the eyes with a two-by-four to get attention. It rnay be we will bave to resont to siznlar tactics if they continue to ignore our needs. It's good to see that some doctors bave set up a clinic and medical building so ail those tests for whieh we ran ail over creation to bave done can now be perforned in one place. Thank God somebody bas a lit- dle foresight and understanding of the problems we face. -~ C MOVIE RENTAL PRICES Sunday f0 Thursday 99$ fo $2.9e Friduy & Soturday 994 f0 $3.97 evon Iower prices for mombrs (Mono to Thurs.) 76 Baldwin t, Brooklin codes and bylaws of-Whitby. Plans to open the sehool on Sept. 17 for the 150 or so gifted students was in jeopardy. By the beginning of October the stop work order had been llfted, although Wallace made it clear the sehool was flot to be occupied until ail conditions of the order bad been fulfilled, lncludlng relocation of portables, an access road for emergency vebicles and the DEDICATION The dedication was held for the &~w Memorial Hall- at St. Thomas Anglican Church, the oldest stan- ding church in Brooklln. TRUCK ROUTE Durham Region works commit- tee rejected a Town of Whitby plan to designate Thickson Rd. as a truck route. The Town wanted the Ministry of Transport (MTC) to place a sign at the intersection of Tbickson Rd. -and Highway 12, just nortb of Brooklln, alerting truckers to use Thickson as a direct route to Hwy 401. The change would divert traffic from going through Brooklln and Sdowntown Whitby via Hwy 12. Whitby coundillor Gerry Emm, chairman of the works committee said the request was denied after committee learned that MTC would not support such a sign.
