WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1987, PACE 3 Cadbury operation will continue until March The Cadbury plant on Champlain Ave. should remain open until at least the middle of March, says a Neilson spokesman. Roy Lackson, vice president of corporate operations for Neilson's, which bought the Cadbury plant last January, says it will take that long to move all the equipment to a plant in Toronto. "I suspect it could be late Mar- ch," says Lackson, confirming that another 55 employees were laid off from the plant two weeks ago. William neilson ltd. bought the 13- vear-old plant for $6.5 million. Lackson says there are about 100 hourly employees remaining on the job but they will be let go as equip- ment is moved. "It is a planned program and most are going to other jobs," he says. Of the 300 people who have been laid off since the announcement, about one-third have found new jobs with the help of a relocation committee. "Only a small portion of those laid off asked for help," says Walt Soetens, production manager for Cadbury and a member of the committee. He says a feeling of depression for laid off workers due to the Christmas season has not occurred. "No one is taking that attitude yet," says Soetens, adding the committee, with the assistance of Durham College, has held a three- day seminar on job relocation. He says more seminars have been scheduled after Christmas in- cluding one in January. One of the reasons past Cadbury employees may not be taking other jobs is lower pay than what they received at Cadbury, says Soetens. Some of the laid-off Cadbury workers have found work at Chrysler in Ajax, EMI Plastics, Duplate, Dupont and Lasco Steel. Anti-nukes open office Anti-nuclear activists in Durham Region have opened an office in downtown Oshawa. "Feelings against nuclear power are running higher than ever in Durham Region," says Suzanne Elston of Newcastle, a member of Durham Nuclear Awareness. "Opening up a new office shows just how much support- we have gained after only one year in existence." "This is a classic David and Goliath battle - a small citizens' group against Ontario Hydro," says Lynne Bates of Whitby, another group member. "We think that most Durham residents sup- port us in our call for a cleaner and safer environment." The office is located on King St. E., just east of Simcoe St. The of- fice was opened by Durham Nuclear Awareness, affiliated with Nuclear Awareness Project. Fail-to-remain charge laid A Whitby youth has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident after he hit a pedestrian in a laneway behind 153 Brock St. S. Police say the youth was eastbound in the laneway when he hit the 59-year-old pedestrian. The youth stopped the car and velled to the pedestrian to ask if he was alright. When the pedestrian yelled back "No," the youth drove off. The pedestrian was taken to Whitby General Hospital but was released shortly after. Under the Young Offenders Act, the youth's name cannot be released. "We have only been helping those who want the help," says Soetens of the seven-person committee com- prised of union members, management and Employment and Immigration Canada. Mobile home park revision FROM PAGE 1 Batten said relocation of the park won't address the problems and he favored improvements on the site. Sam Mizzi of Falcon noted that he has been working on the park to improve it. "We're right back at square one," he said of the revised development scheme. Discussions have been held bet- ween planning staff and the ap- plicant on a new plan. A planning report states that the "discussion plan" was the conclusion of the talks.
