WH-ITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, DECEMI3ER 2,1987, PAGE 3 New contract for separate sehool teachers Durham Region separate school teachers will receive a 4.9 per cent wage increase in each of the next two years under a new contract agreement reached last week. The two-year contract is effective Sept. 1, 1987 and was approved two weeks agro by 750 elernentary and secondary school teachers. Also in the contract is an increase in life insurance to $85,000 frorn $80,000, effective September, 1988; dental plan based on the 1987 schedule instead of the 1985 schedule, effective January, 1988; and, for the first time, Position-sharing, enabling two teachers to split one fuli-time position. The contract cornes alter nine months of negotiations between the Durham separate school board and a conimittee made up representatives of the elementary and secondary branches of both the English and French Catholic Teachers associations. Teachers will receive 100 minutes per week for lass preparation. The board bas also made a commitment to reduce the pupil-teacher ratio, now at 24-1 in elernentary schools. It will be cut to 23.6-1 by September, 1989. Town gives approval -to new plant Whitby council bas given approval to a manufacturing plant proposed by Ronald Roy at 1609 McEwen Dr., in Whitby's industrial area. The building will have a gross floor area of 5,000 sq. ft. and 12 parking spaces. Sixteen parking spaces are required under the site plan agreement but council felt 12 would be sufficient.
