Italian deli opens on Perry St. By BRYCE COOPER While some may have played house and doctor as kids, Rozanna Vasey, of Brooklin, was playingadeli owner and serving imaginary ineat shices and sandwiches to her friends. Vasey, now 27, has changed her childhood fantasy into reality with her new store, Rose's Italian Deli, which has just opened up on Perry St. "I've always wanted to open a delii and now I have," says Vasey, who has had many years of experience in the deli business. "My uncles and aunts own delis back home (Hamilton)," says Vasey, who came to Canada when she was 7. Born and raised in Sicily, Vasey has retained her Italian heritage in her store which has a quiet and clean atmosphere. Vasey has been taught many of the tricks of the trade from her relatives and is doing quite well for the short time that she has been in business. After two years of using a knitting machine to make sweaters for family and friends from her Scarborough home, she and husband Russell recently opened "Valerie's," a knitting and decor- boutique out of a house on John St. the idea started with my knitting machine," says Edgeworth. "My friends wanted things to go with the sweaters I made." She learned the traditional craft of knitting from her grandmother while growing up in Edinburgh, Scotland. Arriving in Canada in 1953, she worked at Eaton's, Simpsons, Smith-Corona and Honeywell, and upon retirement, learned to use a knittîng machine. She and her husband chose to open a store in Whitby mainly because of the 'friendly, country atmosphere" which provided a nice break from the city. Russell helps out in the store's operation with restoration and maintenance, as well as shopping for items for the store. Their son, meanwhile, helps with accounting. The boutique carries a variety of clothes including men's and ladies' track suits, handmade sweaterstdresses, baby clothes, blankets and quilts. Inside a separate room, the boutique has kitchen decorations displayed. "I have just a bit of everything to satisfy everyone," says Edgeworth. When they started renovating the house, believed to be at least a century old, they realized that there would be more work then they expected. "We didn't intend to do as much renovation as we had to do," says Edgeworth. With the help of their neighbors they started work on the boutique for the Oct. 27 opening. "They were just fantastic, I couldn't have met better people to help with the renovations, " says Edgeworth. The Edgeworths tried to keep the original design of the house, but put in modern touches where needed. They plan on renovating the basement and renting it to other boutique owners. The location of the boutique is a problem for some new customers but can be overcome, says Edgeworth. "The people who can find the store are impressed and return with friends," she says.
