WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMI3ER 25, 1987, PAGE 25 Livingstone, Frasers pipe band to perform locally Th 78th Frasers Highlands Pipe Band, 'the current world champions led by pipe major William Livingstone of Whitby, will perform at the Oshawa Little Theatre on Friday, Dec. 11. The pipe band is the successor to the General motors Pipe Band, originally based in Oshawa. The 78th Frasers Highlanders regiment was a re-creation, as part of a 1967 Centennial project, of the 78th Highland Regiment of Foot. This regiment was raised by Simon Fraser (Lord Lovat) in Invernesshire, Scotland to fight in North America. Composed of many of the clansmen and highland gentry who had fought on the side of Charles Stewart, the Bonnie Prince, in the 1745 rebellion, the 78th Regiment of Foot formed part of Wolfe's forces against Montcalm on the Plains of Abraham. Direct descendants of these men have continued to thrive throughout all of Canada. The original re-raising of the Frasers in 1967 in Montreal, was expanded with the founding of the Toronto Regiment of the Frasers. The' pipe band became associated with the 78th Frasers Highlanders of Toronto in 1981. Since that time the band has amassed the following honors: six times Ontario champions supreme, six times Canadian champions, five times North American champions and a record at the World Pipe Band championship since 1984 of third, fourth. second and finally in 1987 first place - world champions. The distinctive feature of the pipe band has been the performing and playing of original tunes and compositions, as well as an innovative approach to pipe band arrangements and orchestrations. The group has for many years been seen as a trail blazer in this regard, always at the vanguard of the new wave of pipe band music. The band consists of 16 pipers and 10 drummers of whom three form the bass and tenor section. It wears the Fraser Highlanders' tartan which is a modern reproduction of the tartan originally worn by the 78tl. Regiment of Foot in the eighteenth century. While originally red in color, the old piece of cloth had faded, so that the modern copyist yielded the somewhat orange hued tartan worn by the band and the regiment today. William Livingstone is Canada's most successful individual piper. He is a master piobaireachd player and redoubtable competitor. His prizes are innumerable; foremost among these include both Inverness and Oban gold medals and the Inverness gold clasp (twice). He was initially taught piping by his father, William Livingstone. The late John Wilson, John MacFayden and Capt. John A. MacLellan number among his major musical influences. He recently published his first book of bagpipe music. Livingstone practices law in Whitby.
