Too many Canadians suifer from chronic headaches which drive them to drugs, to doctors and to bed. But a pain in the head can aiso drive some peopie in new directions seeking relief. By keeping track of when headaches strike, and what the various environmental factors are that coincide with these attacks, individuais are able to determine possible causes. While many peo- pie say stress is the cause of their headaches, they probably have been under stress at other times without a headache resulting. So other cuiprits should be sought. Identifiable migraine inducing foods are alcohol, aged cheeses, Sait, nuts and chocolate. People who are susceptible to migraines might recognizes these as "tringger foods"' which should be avoided. Doing a diet/headache inventory can pinpoint specific changes or- additions to your diet that might contribute to that pain in the head. An American headache expert, Dr. Joan Miller says, 'Many times you can get away with eating a certain food until you're under some stress, then the f ood plus the stress equals a migraine." In addition to the avoidance of "trigger foods"', headache sufferers can increase their resistance by improving overall nutrition. Stress symptoms, including headaches, often are reducerd by introducing more B vitamins into your diet, and minerais play important roles in proper blood circulation and assimilation of nutrients. Two major causes of headaches are caffeine and hunger. The cure for the latter seems obvious - eat. Your body needs fuel and a drop in blood sugar can quickly cause a headache. Caffeine can bring on headaches when you drink it, and even worse ones when you don't. Many people get headaches on the weekend because they don't have their usual cup of coffee first thing in the morning. While it is preferable not to have a caffeine dependency, if you are hooked, try to gradually wean yourself off caffeine by alternating your cup of coffee with an herbaI tea or naturally decaffeinated product.
