WHITBY FREE PRESS, Durham Moves, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1987, PAGE A5 TNT opens centre TNT Overland Express, an inter- national major Canadian LTL (less-than-truck-load) and TL (truck load) carrier, opened a $7-milliofl transportation centre located on Thornton Rd. S., Oshawa on Sept. 26. The 74-door facility covers 23 acres and has 28,000 sq. ft. of space. "I1t's the first of its type in Canada," said Lee Jones, of TNT Overland. "I1t's geared to be a paper-free transportation centre." 1A decision by General Motors of Canada to convert three of -its Oshawa plants to the,'just-in-time' system influenced TNT Overland Express to build the centre. The Just-in-timesystem requires delivery when needed. General Motors cails its facilîty 'Autoplex,' and dlaims it is the largest of its kind in North America. It utilizes the latest in robotics and innovative labor- saving concepts. To operate their transportation system, General Motors had to reduce the number of carriers ser- ving the Oshawa plant to four of five from 40 or 50. In paýrticular with the LTL programs, GM had to work with a carrier with the resources to provide the high level of service required for the Just In Time mainufacturiflg system. Just-in-time, the Japanese system of inventory management, is designed to reduce stock levels to peak efficiency minimums through strict control of inbound materials. As* an-example, said Jones, -11f there's, a "Door 6" receiving door, we can match that." He adds that the operatiori also eftables TNT to deliver in 12 hours "the milk runs to Michigan." Gary King, senior vice president of TNT Overland, says the biggest difference between this and other TNT centres will be the, increased volume which goes through the new centre. "lWe would do 20 per cent of the' volume we do now, without GM," he said.
