Region gets dental grant Durham Region has been allocated a four-month grant of $86,168 to establishla dental program for eilîdren in need of treatmeiit. Last July, the Ministry of Health announced funding for a new dental program for children in need of treatment provided through the health\ units of Ontario. The primar~y objective of the program is to provide required dental care to children attending junior kmn- dergarten through Gr. 8 at elemen- tary schools across the province whose families have no insurance or coverage for necessary dental care and declare that the cost would resuit in financial hardship for the family. According to Dr. Jean Gray, medical officer of health -for Durham, children will be identified through the health unit preven- tative dentistry program currently in place whereby odd-aged children are screened annually by public health nurses. Notices are then sent to parents of children in need of at- tention. Eligible children for the program may attend a dentist who will be paid by the health unit for services rendere, according to an established schedule of benefits. The health unit wilI be funded 100 per cent by the Ministry of Health for the delivery of the new program and are responsible for the co- ordination and administration of the program within their designated geographie area. Durham's allocation of $86,168 will cover the cost of the program from September through Decem- ber 0f this year.
