Three of the five stayed in Whitby homes during their two-week visits. During their first week in Canada, the visitors spent a week working at a girl guide camp and camps for the physically disabled. "Our motto is 'for service of mankind'," explained 26-year-old Julia Bloxsome. But that week made it difficult for the visitors to spend time seeing the various tourist spots. "Everything is s0 neat and dlean here, but you drive on the wrong side of the road," said Sonia Jones, 19,0of Birmingham. "No, we don't we drive on the right side," shot back Miké Jackson, 15, from yellowknife, who joined the 15 from England on their two-week visit. Jackson, along with seven other St. John cadets, had been in England two weeks prior to the ex- change, and it was decided they would also take part.. The exehange, w'hich is in its first year, took more than a year to plan, according to Shirley Spicer of St. John Ambulance. One member of Whitby St. John Ambulance, Steven O'Blenef, travelled to England during the last two weeks of July. . The exehange was also a unique opportunity for St. John in England to celebrate their lOth anniver- sary, said Bloxsome who along with Jones and Wendy Tolley, 16, of Wolverhamptonl, stayed in Whitby homes. In Whitby, the visitors toured Cullen Gardens and roamed through a few shopping plazas. They also visited the downtown. "It 1550o peaceful and quiet here," remarked Tolley. Bloxsomne noticed there were a lot more houses than stores. "I guess the stores just haven't caught up," she said, adding i"everything is 50 relaxed here. ", Despite being here for two weeks they only spent one morning at the Whitby St. John office on Ash St. While giving a training session, Spicer noted the five - were not familiar with learning from visual aids such as videotape recorders. "I think they are slightly behind us in up-to-date teaching methods," said Spicer. As for the future of the exchange, Spicer said it will continue. She also said there are plans to twin St. John Ambulance in Whitby with that of New West Midland St. John Am- bulance in England. They visited the Science Centre last Thursday, had dinner on behaif of the Ontario government that evening, then attended a Toronto Blue Jays game. They left for England last Friday. WHITBY ST.
