The non-profit boarding house will be funded by Durham Region and the Ministry of Com- munity and Social Services, and sponsored by the Al Saints Anglican Church. Because the church is located on Dundas St., it is frequently visited by poor or homeless people who need help or have complaints about their living arrangements, accor- ding to Shepherd. "Our attention was brought to the very bad living situations," says Shepherd, adding that some ex- patients live in housing with no heat in the middle of winter, or sleep on floors with just a thin blanket to cover them. "The concern was there and was talked about." Shepherd says that the majority of boarding homes in Whitby are run as businesses, and are often "very restrictive." The boarders are given very little pocket money, and are sent out in the morning with a box lunch and cannot return until the late afternoon. "They have no place to go," says Shepherd, adding that at the All Saints home, boarders will be allowed access to the house 24 hours a day. "For those with no friends, family or job, these other places are often not very suppor- tive. But we hope the living situation here will be a lot richer than in a place where people are trying to make a profit." Although there is a patient housing service at. Whitby Psychiatric Hospital to help discharged persons find adequate living arrangements, Shepherd says that sometimes "Things break down," and the person may leave their home for personal reasons. The five board members will be Shepherd, lawyer David Simms, retired merchant Harold Edwards, teacher Laura Elliott and church warden Glen Camelford, executive director will be Nancy Roxborough. The psychiatric hospital is also looking for low cost accom- modation downtown for a clubhouse for patients. Ad- ministrator Dianne Macfarlane says staff are being hired although a location foi the clubhouse has yet to be determined. ALISON GUY of Whitby won $200,000 in the July 30 Wintario draw.
