Pickering police station is approved Regional council members have given Durham police a nice little present with their sanction to pur- chase the old Pickering'town hall and turn it into a new headquarters for the Pickering division of the force. During anin camera session last week, council members voted to buy the building and property for $1.5 million, repayable at $450,000 a year for three years, with the balance of $600,000 due on the four- th year. Renovations, expected to amount to some $500,000, will be paid for from funds realized in the sale of the old police station on Kingston Rd. "I don't doubt we can get a million for the old building and that should more than cover any renovations," said regional chair- man Gary Herrema in an interview after the decision was made. He indicated Durham Regional Police would take possession of the Pickering Town Hall in September 1989 and should be able to move into the renovated building in the spring of 1990. The building, which is located on the northeast corner of Highway 2 and Brock Rd., is 'highly visible. A prestige location,' according to Herrema. The feeling was echoed by Whitby Mayor Bob Attersley, who heads up the police com- mission. He indicated the new Pickering headquarters would allow for 60 per cent more physical building room plus 100 per cent more parking for the rapidly growing detachment.
