Free Press photo Retainparkresi d A Whitby resident has suggested that the Town designate as parkland an area south of Dundas St. E. and east of Springwood St. George Lofthouse, of Lofthouse Brass Manufacturing Ltd. on Hopkins St., is concerned that suburban growth in the area will sweep away the earlier history of the property formerly owned by the Lick family. Lofthouse says the Lick family made the flats on their property available to the public for public skating in winter between the 1920's and 1940's. He asked that the area where the pond used to be remain a park and be called Lick's Pond. "This was a focal point for not only the local residents but for people in the Oshawa-Whitby area," states Lofthouse in his letter of request to the Town's ad- ministration committee. In a report to be forwarded to Lofthouse as a response, planning director Bob Short says the area is now made up of two separate properties, both owned by Whitby Estates Ltd., the developer of the subdivision to the south. The one property, 1.7 acres in size and located at the northeast corner of Springwood St. and Nichol Ave., is zoned for town houses or a low- rise apartment buildings. The other property, 10.3 acres in size, contains the actual wetland and is now designated as hazard land and zoned as a greenbelt area. Grant Menzies, his company Grant Menzies Motors Ltd., and Lorne Skyes have been charged with nine counts of fraud over $200. The charges were laid by the Ministry of Commercial and Con- sumer Relations and involved alleged frauds totalling $13,000. Customers had complained to the ministry that they had not received the full amount for the sale of their cars, even though a consignment fee of $300 had been paid. Goodluck! Denis O'Connor would like to extend its congratulations to Christina MacDonald. Christina participated in the recent Canadian gymnastic championships in Winnipeg. She won a gold on the balance beam and placed in the top 10 in the other three events: floor, vault and uneven bars. Christina came third overall in Canada, and we at DO'C wish her the best in the upcoming world championships. Our senior girls soccer team moves on towards the LOSSA semi- finals. The girls played extremely well in the quarter-finals against a strong Durham Cliristian team. Despite the wind factor, DO'C managed to hold Durham off until the second half when the wind was in the Chargers' favor. Margot Jelliman won thegame for DO'C, and Ingrid Séide recorded another shutout. Our junior girls were not as successful as the seniors, losing to a tough O'Neill team in playoff action. The girls ended the season in third place and I'm sure the coach appreciated their enthusiasm and energy.
