WHITBYFREE PRESS,'WEDNESDAY, MAY 13, 1987, PAGE 3 A Whitby-wlde parents' group bas been formed to take action on 'v4rious education issues. The Education Action Committee is i80 far made up of four public elementary schools, the Corridor Area Ratepayers' Association and, as of Monday afternoon, St. Paul's Separate School, the latest. ad-' dition. "We thought, "Here's ail thege- littie groups trying to fight their problems," says- Cathy Roweil, president of, the Thornton Home andParent Association, and one of the*organizers ofthe new group. "lWe can do more coilectively. ."We hope. to be the main organization. W6 would support the. smaller associations. But we're not a shadow group." The- public schools include Dr. Robe rt Thornton,, the 'future Bellwood .school .(Kendalwood area) and Palmerston - FPublie School. The existing Thornton parents' associatio n and a' Palmer- ston school committee have iun- dicated concerns about students walking to school next year as a Whitby parent group formed resuit of the future Bellwood school and the boundary- changes for Palmerston effective in September. Bussing and schogl safety is. a main concern of the« committee, says Rowell.- "That's a. real hot topic right now," she says, arguing that the Durham Board of Education pollcy on bussing is "Inot consistent." A second concern of the commit- tee is. the new- administration building wanted by the board. "We feel that the time is not rigbt,"ý sayg Roweil, explaining that school space and other issues are more important to committee members. "If it's okay in 10 years for a new administration building, PUi dig the hole for them. " (A committee letter to trustees is in this week's edition.) A third concern is community use of schools by both children and adults. "It's a topic that bas been avoided in the past, " says Rowell. She says the committee wilI try to bring Town coundil and the school board, together, -although their relationship bas recently been frac- tious. "ThÏe board and Town are always blaming each ôther, " she sa Ys. "ïWe're not'a shadow commit- tee," Roweil emphasized. "We're not disturbers. We'd like everybody to work together. "We realize we can't have change overnight. We know it's slow." Rowell said Palmerston parents will now "have pull" to get the ex- pansion they want because of boun- dary changes.
