DUR HAM SEPARA TE BOARD School grant approved WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 6,1987, PAGE 3 Iel~ver Ministry of Education school project approval given last week includes a new separate elemen- tary school in Whitby. The school, to be located on a site on lands north.of Rossland Rd., will "take the pressure off" enrolment at St. Paul's elementary school; ac- cording to Earl Lagroix, director of education for the Durham Region Roman Catholie Separate School Board. An addition to- St. Paul's located on Garrard Rd., has just been completed. - The project was one of seven ap- proved by- the ministry for the board in 1988, representing a total of about $18.5 million in building. Lagroix said the seven projects is the most ever approved for the board but "is exactly what we ex- pected. "This is the first year we got all we wanted,"-he said, pointing out the need for school space. Other projects include , an elementary school in Ajax, a $2.25- million addition to St. Michael's school in Oshawa, and $6.88-million third phase of a new high school in Pickering. The new schools in Whitby and Ajax were board priorities, as was the addition to St. Michael's. Grant Andrews, superintendent of business for the board, says a new high school is needed in north Whitby "within five years" and that project will now "rate high" on the board's priorities. "We hope to get a high school in Whitby not too-far down the road," he said, explaining that it will help provide relief to the "now over- crowded" Paul Dwyer school. He said discussion is now under- way with the Town of Whitby and a developer for a complex north of the Costain development that would include a separate elementary, school, separate high school, public school, park area and recreation facilities. DURHAMBOARD OFEDUCA TION Funding for 10 projeets A new boiler for Henry Street High School was one of 10 Durham Board of Education projects ap- proved for capital funding in 1988 by the Ministry of Education. The 10 projects, worth a total of $13,787,000, include two elementary schools in Pickering (Maple Ridge and Valley Farm), an elementary school in Ajax (Picov Estates) and additions to Kedron school in Oshawa and Greenbank school in Scugog Township. Dr. C.F. Cannon school. and O'Neill CVI will also get new boilers while roof renovations will take place at Ajax High School. A mix-up in communications resulted in an announcement by the ministry last week that funding had been- approved for a addition to Palmerston Public School in Whit- by. However, the board had previously informed the ministry that the Palmerston addition was no longer a priority due to boun- dary changes. Boundary changes will see 125 students now at Palmerston atten- ding the soon-to-be-renamed Whit- by Senior Public School in Septem- ber this year. The senior school will become a kindergarten to Gr. 8 facility. Enrolment at the school is now 289, according to principal Wayne Ellis. The enrolment projection for the next school year, minus the 125 students, is now 289, according to principal Wayne Ellis. The enrolment projection for the next school year, minus the 125 students, is now at 240. Ellis said that figure will be higher by September because of nearby development. A committee of Palmerston parents has maintained that the school should still be expanded. They claim the expansion was previously promised and say facilities in the school are outdated. A parent subcommittee also recently presented a brief and petition before the board's property and transportation committee to request an exception to the board's "no-busing" policy for students who will now have to walk to Whit- by Senior Public School. Committee will discuss the request at the May 20 meeting.
