The association will field a projected eight house league teams and six rep teams (possibly seven). Association president Peter Husted said 65 kids are trying to make the novice rep team, so the association is considering fielding two novice rep teams. There will be two divisions in house league,, with one division comprised of tyke and novice mixed teams and the other division 2omprised of peewee and bantam nixed teamis. The association will also have at least six rep teams at the paper-- weight, tyke, novice, peewee, ban- tamandmidget levels. - Last year, the tykes were the provincial champions. And this year, as it did in 1986, the association wilI host the tyke provincial tournament. It will be held at Iroquois Park and Brooklin arenas. Husted said the tournament will attract more than 600 kids and their parents to Whitby. At least 50 new kids are playing lacrosse this year, says Husted. Those players are not only from Whitby. Players from Oshawa and Ajax compete in the Whitby association because their municipality does not have any organized lacrosse associations, says Husted. Basebali season begins May 9 The Whitby Minor Basebal Association will kick off the new season with an opening day parade scheduled for Saturday, May 9 at 9:30 a.m. This year approximately 1,400 girls and boys will be participating in the parade, each decked out in the uniform of one of the many local sponsors. Commencing at E.A. Fairman Public School the parade will go east on Walnut St. to Brock St., south on Brock St. to St. John St., and east on St. John to Peel Park where the official opening ceremonies will be held. The team, which lost to Port Hope in the championship final of the Eastern Ontario Basebal Association last season, will again be coached by Harold Moore. "We're pretty well solid alI- around," says first baseman George Yates, who predicts another good finish for Whitby. The team has lost two top players - Barry Smith, the designated hitter last year, and fine right-hander Greg Mclsaac. But returning is the top catching duo of Gary Shearer and former Oshawa player Tom Spaxman. "He's really improved the team a lot," says Yates of Spaxman. Also returning are left-handet. Mike Welling, who has shown im- provement every year in the league, and John Turner, the hard- throwing right-hander who wifl provide relief. And manager Moore, is also a pit- cher. A new face will be Tony Sonichet- ti, a Whitby junior team player last year. His brother, Dave, is a longtime member of the team and patrols centrefield. The team usually plays home games Tuesdaynights, at Iroquois Park, described by Yates as'often a "cold" for basebail when the winds blow in off Lake Ontario.
