P~AGE 10, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 6,1987 Severance application awaits Burns-St. upgrading To the satisfaction of nearby residents,- a land severance ap- plication for a property at the southwest corner of King and Burns st. in Whitby has been tabled for six months by Durham Region's land division-committee. "We're ecstatic about it," says John Luff, one of about 40 of the residents who signed a petition op- posing the severance. "Most of us have lived. here 20 Whitby will spend more than $141,000 to spruce up the municipality during the summer months. The Town will spend $106,000 on five lawn mowers - three riding mowers, a heavy duty hydraulic motor for cutting grass on sloped areas as well as parks and a five- years. It's nice and quiet and we want to keep it that way." The application, by Frank Giacalone, to divide the property into three lots to accommodate duplexes. A representative of the applicant noted at the land division commit- tee meeting last week that the property, zoned R3, can accom- modate the development. Luff said he understands that a developer would try for the maximum gang self-proppelled mower. As well, the Town will enter into an agreement with two companies for weed spraying on roadsides and parks and boulevards. Council has also passed a resolution allowing regional weed inspectors to destroy noxious weeds or weed seed with the cost to be passed on to the property owner. development possible, but residen- ts would prefer either three single- family dwellings or a division of the property into two, rather than three, lots. Luff says the property is surrounded by single-famiiy dwellings and "overdevelopment" of the corner property could decrease surrounding proporty values. He also argues there would bc parking problems wlth the proposed development. Land division committeu, which can consider oniy the sommenc and not- the proposuod buildin 0i, decided to table the application tilin- ce Burns St. is to undergo upgrading this summor. The suggestion to table wasî made by Don Gibson, a Whitby ropresen- tative on the committee. The representative of the ap- plicant promlsed to dlscues residents' concerns. Meanwhile, Luff said residents were "«pretty resolved" and will "Igive (hem à fight" over the existing plan but promised to "go halfway" to arrive at an amended proposal. 0o E T0 Pr Former Domon Store Employees, Best For Less Employees and Markham Corporate Mr'.
