Oshawa. Whitby will undergo riding boundary changes. Whitby will be split in two and become part of two federal ridings under proposed revisions of riding boundaries. The existing Ontario riding will lose the northern part of Whitby as well as Uxbridge Township and keep Ajax and Pickering under the proposals presented to the House of Commons last week. The Durham-Northumberland riding, to be renamed Durham riding, would gain Uxbridge and the northern parts of Whitby and Oshawa. The southerly urban portion of Oshawa would make up the revised Oshawa riding. Swim club draw Mary McNeil of Whitby won $200 in the Pay-As-You-Pull draw held by the Whitby Iroquois Swim Club April 12 at Iroquois Park complex. Louise McMahon of Brampton won second prize of $100 and 'Heather Forshaw of Whitby won $50. Only five of the existing 95 federal electoral districts in On- tario would remain unchanged un- der the proposals. The amendmen- ts would also increase the number of districts to 99. Members of the House of Com- mons have 30 days to file objections to the proposals. Both Ontario MP Scott Fennell and Durham- Northumberland MP Allan Lawrence plan to oppose the changes. Bowman replied that the answer is "obvious" but that the board must operate within the guidelines it has imposed. "I think I am sensitive to that issue," she added. "Patty is only one trustee," said Carol Yeo, area school superinten- dent. "To change, you have to have all trustees." Palmerston parents have con- cerns not only for the "long walk" to Whitby Senior but also for what they say is a "potentially dangerous railway crossing," numerous residential streets and lack of Block Parents along the route to be walked by students to and from school. "This walk should enlighten you to our concerns, and perhaps then you will appreciate why we are prepared to take this issue as far as required to achieve a suitable resolution," states the letter from- the Flewellings to Whitby trustees Bowman, John Buchanan and Ian Brown. The walk had been planned for 4:15 p.m.-on Wednesday, April 15. Palmerston parents have also conducted a door-to-door survey to gather reaction to the change in school boundaries. Parents had wanted the school to expand to a kindergarten to Gr. 8 facility and claim such an expansion had been previously promised.
