N., north of Dundas, signs," suggested Drumm last "a real mess." G'day. No this is not some type of April Fool's joke, folks, it's really me, back with The Free Press after a four-year hiatus. The matter of amalgamating the Brooklin Profile with the Whitby paper has been the subject of discussion for some time now, and after a series of discussions between myself and the publishers of the two weeklies involved, the day has finally arrived. At the time of writing, it hasn't yet been decided whether The Profile will be a section unto itself as it was when contained within the Port Perry Star, or an amalgamation into, and as part of, the Whitby Free Press as it now stands. personally, I would like to see an amalgamation. A sort of tying together of the north ward with its southern contemporaries, but time will tell. There will probably be a period of trial and error before we get our act together so bear with us. I have heard many complaints during my travels over the years that Whitby ends at Taunton Road. In some cases, I have to admit, I too have felt that way. But here is the opportunity to put a halt to that misconception in at least one case. We now have the chance to receive media coverage on a regular basis in a well-received weekly newspaper serving thousands of households. This is an excellent chance to let the residents in the southern part of Whitby, and its neighboring municipalities, know what a vital community-minded area the north ward is. I have been grateful over this past four years of the sup- port I have received from the people of the Brooklin area, and hope I can be as bold as to think that the support will be there for many years to come. Now, down to some serious business. It's about these television evangelists. Stop laughing, I'm trying to be serious here for a minute, and if I can grit my teeth to write this piece, you can surely try to do the same while reading it. The whole matter is kind of old hat by now. Never- theless, Ihave been very good at curbing my thoughts un- til now, since every person has his, or her, breaking point. To tell you the truth, I am getting so sick and tired of the whole deal. And I wondered if there was possibly anything new that could be said. There was. VIEWPOINT by ROXANNE REVELER In Sunday's Sun, Charles, Templeton, a man whom I have admired for many years, wrote yet another article on the subject. As usual it was excellent. A former man of the cloth himself, Templeton knows of what he speaks, and his opening paragraph hits the proverbial nail right on its proverbial head. To wit: "What astounds about television Christianity is that it is so unchristian." The reason TV evangelism's "holy war" has so caught the attention of the public and the media is because, sud- denly out in the open for ail to see, is the naked avarice, the ungodly ambition and the bafflegab sanctimony of some of the principal proponents of the TV religion business. utmougn tacts and figures are boring, it is relative to state it is a business, and a big one. A $2-billion-a-year business in fact that might still have been ignored for many years to come had it not been for the brazen acts of Oral Roberts and his "your money for my life" con-job on national television. I marvel that a man smart enough to amass such an empire and hold on to it for so many years could actually feel the populous gullible enough to swallow the story he handed out. There are many references in the bible concerning those who have been "touched" by the Lord. Who have been priviledged to have heard his word directly? Until now, no one in his right mind would have suggested that the Lord was a monetary being. Roberts' big mistake was to think he could be the first to do so. I must admit, I had never watched one of these avangelists until the scuttlebut hit the fan recently. Since then, I have tried to catch the whole kettle of fish...not for the whole program mind you, stomach isn't that good...but at least in part. Jim Bakker could give Monty Hall a run for his money. His wife Tammy, however, would have to be replced as his television hostess. She doesn't look the part to be tur- ning doors around. No, she would do much better say at Jarvis and Queen Streets in Toronto, with the three inches of make-up, false eyelashes and ever-so-perfect teeth. Then there's Jimmy Swaggart. He's been accused of trying to dethrone Bakker. But in return he says he Wouldn't take Bakker's PTL Club as a gift. The whole thing is a big laugh as far as I'm concerned, although I have to admit the plots and counter-plots that have been unravelling over the past few weeks make Dynasty and Dallas appear no more daring than an episode of Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. I feel so sorry for the millions of faithful that are guised into parting with their money by these people every week. They pay rip-off prices (cleverly called offerings) and they get so little in return, save little sermon cassettes, or vials of dubious Jordan water. But who could really begrudge them this if it truly makes them happier, their days brighter? The thing that annoys me most is that they are so ex- ploited by these fakers who claim they are speaking for God. My thoughts were phrased so expertly by Tem- pleton, I will use his closing words as my own. "The real, the monumental wickedness at the heart of this sleazy business is the crass exploitation of Jesus of Nazareth. The tragedy is that, in the hands of these unlet- tered, avaricious, fast-buck pitchmen, the man of Galilee,* who bas - dammit! - something to say to this floundering generation, is being scourged and crucified afresh."
