Mr. Albert D. Russell, President, remains the head of the company with Allan J. Mills as Vice- President and Dale W. Gray as Sales Manager. With sessions for adults, families, ladies and special groups and even sock hops on weekends, the roller rink business is becoming more community-oriented, says the manager of Whitby's Wheelies. Paul Scammell oversees the skating operation that provides the music and lighting to suit the crowd. When Wheelies opened seven years ago at its Burns St. E. location, he was disc jockey. "It was then part of a chain that went across Canada," he recalls. The chain later sold the rinks to the managers. Wayne Mancuso owns Wheelies. Scammell says the Whitby rink serves an area stretching from Toronto to Kingston. One of the former chain rinks located in Peterborough is now used for bingo. Scammell has learned that roller skating popularity reaches its zenith every seven years. That 'up- swing' period has begun again, says Scammell, who says the seven-year cycle has existed since skating began in the last century. He knows the numbers won't ap- proach those of Wheelies' opening day seven years ago - 2,000 skaters on Feb. 8, 1980. He admits there have been a few lean years since then but the return to popularity has brought about 500 skaters on the weekend (Friday and Satur- day) and 100 to 200 on week nights. With programs designed for specific customers, such as the ladies program on Thursday mor- ning, "we really try to pull a special scene every day." Thé weekend sessions are augmented by a half hour of sock hop. "We're providing both services at the same time," says Scammejl, who says the mix is "something new at the roller rinks" that works since roller skating and dancing share similarities. Unlike other roller rinks, Wheelies also holds fundraisers for various groups. The Whitby rink has a plasticized surface, providing better traction and smo7othness, and less main- tenance, than the concrete or wooden floors of other rinks or arenas. Wheelies rents skates in quan- tities of 1,000 at a time. Scammell says skates, at about $100 a pair, are bought from Dominion Skate Co. Winter is the busy season for skating, summer is quiet - "You can't compete with the great out- doors," says Scammell. Summer provides the time for maintenance and skate repairs. Rink patrons range in age from youngsters to 70-year-olds. Waltzes are enjoyed on Mondays, adults night, as the music becomes "quieter," says Scammell. Wheelies Family Roller Skating Centre is a member of Roller Skate Canada, a national association. Higher profile for hospital The Whitby General Hospital has just embarked on an ambitious plan to develop a higher profile in the community. Opened in 1969 as the Dr. J.O. Ruddy Hospital, it stands on the west side of the Whit- by harbour lands south of Highway 401. People are constantly surprised when they are told that the hospital which is outwardly modernistic is in fact approaching 20 years old. YES, YES, YES, Located in a Town which for many years has been dominated by larger communities on both sides, the hospital remains largely unknown to many Whitby riesiden- ts. The hospital has a full range of active care services and has instant access to even the most specialized medical facilities through cooperative arrangements with other area hospitals. Several studies have been done on the hospital in the last few years and the consensus is that the hospital should be expanding in the near future to meet the growing needs of this community. The Whitby Free Press - is cooperating with the hospital to in- crease the public's general awareness of the facilities available and will be running a series of articles on the hospital over the next few months Whitby has a general hospital... since 1969 our emergency department is staffed 24 hrs per day with a doctor on the premises at ail times we have a fullservice laboratory we have a modern radiology (x-ray) dept. we have a busy physiotherapy department 4. è M I I I I '%I.
