Whitby had qualified for the in- ternational silver stick by win- ning the regional silver stick in Ajax over the Christmas holidays. Whitby's silver stick record remains unscathed by losses as Whitby won a seven out of seven games in both Ajax and Newmarket. Coaches Brian Dillon and Jim Young credited the players for team effort, enthusiasm and s portsmanship througliout the tournament. ARl team members contributed to Whitby's *success tlirougli goals, assists and good goaltending. Ini the first gamne, Whitby defeated Stratford 5-3. Paul Brooks began the scoring with a goal assisted by Wayne Primeau. Paul Dillon, Andre Marois, PrimeaU and Brooks once again, fired four more goals. Jon Racicot and Derek Young each earned an assist. Stephen St. Amand, backed up by the team,. guarded the net un- dauntingly against a persevering Stratford team. In the second game, Whitby overwhelmed Guelphi 11-2. Whit- by's il goals and 15 assists were shared by varlous team mem- bers. Marois, Primeau, and Young had two goals each, while Craig Talent, Brooks, Jeff Mon- taigue, Dilon, and Jim Brown had one each. -Double assists came, from Dillon, Brooks, Mike Hogan and Racicot, while singles came from, Talent,' Mat'Muir, Brown, Tim Chai, Primeau, Young and Marois. Whitby's goaltender, Jamie 'Hogel, played solidly tliroughout the game. The third game brought Ajax and Whitby,- both - undefeated together once again ini the silver stick championship match. Ajax remained a scoring tbreat tliroughout the game, but Whitby combined offensive thrust and defensive strength, backed by St. Amand's superb goaltending, to win 4-0. Tim Chai put in the first goal on assists "from Marois, and Mike Wye,-as well as the last goal on an assist froni Racicot.' Two more goals came from Mai'ois assisted by Talent and Brooks, assisted by Young. Whitby's minor atoms, spon- sored by Checker's Variety, will be travelling to Barrie this coming weekend for an inter- national AAA minor tournamént. Peewees hng on to win in Blenh.eim* .Brooklin-Whitby mi- nor peewee ail-stars withstood a furious late- game attack by Milton to win the final and the cliampionship of a tour- pament in Blenheim recently., Whitby entered the third period of the final With a 2-0 lead. Milton ,evened the score before Whitby got two more >goals to lead 4-2. Witli tiine running out and Whtby already shortlinded after a penalty cail, Milton puiled their goaltender to add another attacker and narrowed the score to 4-3 wth 44- seconds left. But Whitby h eld on to daim the champion- ship. Z. Hayden provided clutch goaltending for Whitby. B. Stella scored what. proved to be the winning goals on a setup by D. Copeland, while P. Allison, B. French and K. Vipond had the other Whitby goals. Whitbycruised to a 7- 2 win over Woodstock in the first game of the tournarient whicli in- cluded A,*AA and AAA teams. M. Brillinger scored twice for Whitby witli singles to J. Mclvor, Allison, Stella, Frenchi and Copeland. McIvor and R. Shanahan. eacli liad two assists while S. McAdam was in net for the winners. -Whitby reached the final by upsetting the tournament favorites, Chatham, in a thrilling overtimeganie. Stella scored the win- ning goal for Whitby with two minutes remaining i the over- time period. Vipond assisted. Cliathami took a 2-0 lead in the game but Whitby charged back to even the score at 3-3 before the end of regulation time. Copeland scored two goals, and Alilson had the other . Mclvor had two assists while W. Stevenson, J. Jolinston, Stella and Vipond also had assists in regulation time, whicli featured fine goaltending by Hayden. C. Stillar was strong defensively for Whitby- in all three wis. Currie in national1 swiLm meet At the recent Ontario Cup swim meet, Whitby resident Janice Currie qualified ' for the national senior dham- pionships to lie held in Winnipeg *froni Jan. 31 to Feb. 3. Currie, a member of the Whitby ý'Iroqu ois Swixn CluL made, the qualifylng -ftandard for the 200 individual medley but she had to do it the liard way. After , .narrowly missing the qualifying time during Friday's competition, she was entered in a time trial on the final day of the meet where she bet- tered the national stan'- dard. withý a time of 2:29.17. Competing at the senior nationals, is a result of liard work and dedication to the sport, whicli requires lier to put -in'14-16 hours of pool traiing and an ad- ditional three to four hours of weight traininig each week. Brett Rayne, Scott MacDonell and David Lylyk had goals in the Beileville contest while Jason Bonnyman scored twice and Paul Moore once in the loss to Kingston.
